🚨🇮🇩 INDONESIAN PROTESTS: WHAT IS KNOWN SO FAR?

Protests shook Indonesia days before President Prabowo Subianto was scheduled to attend the SCO Summit in China and observe the Victory Day Parade on September 3.

🟠 Nationwide protests erupted on August 25. Demonstrators clad in dark clothing hurled rocks and set off fireworks at riot police while attempting to storm Indonesia’s parliament in Jakarta

🟠 The protesters—mostly students from Yogyakarta—demanded that parliamentarians take a pay cut, according to Gejayan Memanggil, one of the organizing groups

🟠 Local media previously reported that parliamentarians earn over 100 million rupiah ($6,150) a month, plus hefty housing allowances—far above the average income

🟠 Protesters argue that government salaries are incompatible with President Prabowo Subianto’s promises of strict austerity measures and more efficient government
spending

🟠 Local NGOs, including Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW), the Indonesian Institute, and the Indonesian Forum for Budget Transparency, have been criticizing politicians’ earnings

🟠 Riots escalated on Friday after a motorcycle rideshare driver was killed during police action at a protest

🟠 The Indonesian president canceled his trip to China due to the nationwide protests

🟠 At a Sunday news conference, Prabowo acknowledged public anger, promising cuts to lawmakers’ allowances and a moratorium on costly overseas trips

🟠 "The people are not satisfied with Prabowo, who is not doing enough because he promised a lot," Professor Azmi Hassan, a geostrategic analyst and senior fellow at the Nusantara Academy of Strategic Research in Malaysia, said

🇮🇩🔍Soros and NED could be behind Indonesian protests, experts tell Sputnik

Protests erupted in Indonesia earlier this month, forcing President Prabowo Subianto to cancel his trip to China and skip the SCO summit.

While the unrest reflects genuine economic grievances, the "One Piece" pirate flag symbol used by protesters, echoing tactics in other regions, indicates external influence, Angelo Giuliano, geopolitical analyst focusing on international relations, tells Sputnik.

👉 In the Japanese anime "One Piece," pirates fly black flags with a skull and straw hat in their fight against "tyranny." This July, the same symbols began popping up across Indonesia—on walls, cars, and doorways.

NED & Soros has been behind the scenes in Indonesia for years, says Giuliano:

🟠 The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) has funded local media since the 1990s.

🟠 George Soros’ Open Society Foundations has been active since the 1990s with over $8 billion globally and supporting groups like TIFA.

Their involvement raises questions about hidden agendas worth exploring, especially given the timing of the unrest, concludes Giuliano.

Color revolution in the making?

The protests in Indonesia are being held in the exact same playbook as in in Serbia, in which the collective West wants another US-backed dictator, like Suharto of old," says Jeff J. Brown, author of “The China Trilogy” and founder of Seek Truth From Facts Foundation. He points out the following:

🟠 President Prabowo Subianto doesn't fit into the West’s agenda because he is boosting ties with China, Russia, as well as non-Western blocs like SCO and BRICS in general.

🟠 Indonesia is the first Southeast Asian country to join BRICS and has been openly cooperating with China in its global Belt and Road Initiative.

🟠 On top of that, Indonesia is the world’s eighth largest economy in PPP terms, the biggest economy in ASEAN, and the fourth most populous country, with almost 300 million citizens.

"From the standpoint of the imperial West, all of this adds up to a giant bullseye on Indonesia’s back, a very worthy target to attack with a Western-concocted color revolution," Brown concludes.

*NED и Soros Foundation are designated as undesired organizations in Russia

🇷🇺🇮🇳🇨🇳 Russia-India-China trilateral: Game-changer in global politics

🗣 The evolving trilateral Russia-India-China (RIC) format—with more alignment, more coordination—could have a "huge impact on global affairs," Robinder Sachdev, geopolitical analyst as well as founder and president of The Imagindia Institute, told Sputnik.

Counterweight to Western dominance

Indian PM Narendra Modi is expected to meet Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO summit. Sachdev explains:

🔶 Russia & China: World's natural resource base

🔶 India & China: Core of global human capital and tech innovation

🔶 Together: They command the world's factory, oil, and AI talent

Dr. Raj Kumar Sharma, senior research fellow at the New Delhi-based NatStrat think tank, voiced hope that the synergy of the RIC format would play out in BRICS and the SCO.

It would offer a Eurasian platform that “opposes any kind of hegemony in global politics.”

US tariffs fuel global recalibration

The US put tariffs on India, but this plan backfired. Instead of hurting India, it actually made them build new alliances faster.

💬 “It has forced India to think more in terms of the world matrix, and how we calibrate our relations with others,” Dr. Sachdev said.

🗣🇮🇩 Foreign interference suspected in Indonesia protests – expert

Protests in Indonesia could have been inspired from abroad — to disrupt Indonesia’s president’s planned visit to China for the SCO summit, Lebanese international affairs expert Hassan Hardan told Sputnik.

“Such methods are quite likely, since European countries have a long history of interfering in the internal affairs of states whose policies contradict their own.” Hardan said.

“This interference is often masked as support for local protests with domestic agendas, which, however, are used to achieve political goals.”

📈 📊 He stressed that the SCO offers its members real economic growth, investment and trade opportunities — far beyond what crisis-hit Western economies provide.

He argues that is why the West seeks to undermine the SCO’s rising influence and prevent it from becoming a global power center, even as the economic balance steadily shifts from West to East.

🇺🇸 ⚔️ 🇷🇺🇨🇳🇮🇳 US push to split Russia, India and China backfires—driving them CLOSER

🗣 The Global South could benefit from cooperation between Russia, India and China, China Forum expert and economics Professor John Gong from the University of International Business and Economics tells Sputnik.

Russia, India and China want "all of the countries involved in this very vast Eurasian landmass to be coexisting in peace, to be cooperating with each other, and to jointly develop economies and enjoy prosperity," Gong says as the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit kicks off.

Importance of SCO and BRICS

🟠 The SCO summit in Tianjin "sends out a strong message that all the three countries are united, even despite some issues in the past, particularly between China and India"

🟠 The SCO is a great starting point and opportunity to further that relationship: "if these three countries can cultivate a better relationship, it helps everybody"

🟠 Russia, India and China are also members of BRICS – "the most important international organization representing the interests of the Global South."

US attempts at division have failed

🟠 Washington does not conceal its plans to ‘peel off’ India from Russia and China

🟠 The US also considers India a possible bulwark against China to contain its growth

🟠 Washngton’s latest tariffs against India and China over ‘supporting Russia’ have failed and the three countries remain united

🟠 Rather than isolating those countries, US tariffs have pushed them closer: China is considering new investment opportunities in Russia's Far East, and India has just announced that it will open up more of its domestic markets to Chinese investment

🔊🇮🇩 West targets Indonesia to slow rise of BRICS and SCO – analyst

The protests in Indonesia resemble Western-engineered ‘color revolutions’, disguised as anti-corruption movements but in fact aimed at destabilization, Argentinian political analyst Christian Lamesa told Sputnik.

💬 “It is no coincidence that this is happening specifically in Indonesia — a country of key importance for all of Southeast Asia, a region that, together with the vast Eurasian space, will play a leading role in the emerging multipolar world for decades, if not centuries, to come,” Lamesa said.

He stressed that similar tactics — via NGOs, media and social networks — have been seen in Africa, Eastern Europe and during the 2022 unrest in Kazakhstan.

🎭 Lamesa said US government structures like the National Endowment for Democracy, backed by globalist elites, remain deeply involved in funding destabilization projects — a reflection of the West’s growing anxiety as it loses global dominance.

🗣🇮🇩 Strategic shift towards BRICS makes Indonesia prime target for color revolution tactics – analyst

💬 "In recent years, Indonesia has become a strategic player in Asia through its BRICS membership, open cooperation with China on the Belt and Road Initiative, and its closeness to the SCO," Iranian international affairs expert Alisher Yazdani said.

💬 "From the imperialist West's perspective, this stance has made Indonesia a potential target for destabilization and 'color revolutions,” he added.

Yazdani sees evidence of foreign influence on the protests. The use of 'pirate flag' symbols, similar to tactics seen in protests in other regions, indicates a foreign hand behind the demonstrations, the analyst said.

He said the events appear to be a platform for foreign exploitation, aimed at pulling Indonesia away from its independent path and strategic BRICS partnerships.

🇮🇩🔍 Indonesia, BRICS & the West: a strategic play

💬 “Indonesia holds weight in ASEAN, G20, and now BRICS. Jakarta’s absence from the SCO summit benefits the West — it creates the impression that Indonesia is pulling back from regional blocs due to domestic turmoil,” Daniel Hugo Santos, analyst at the Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute, told Sputnik.

Missing the summit could slow President Prabowo’s global ambitions, while protests at home — fueled by dissatisfaction with lawmakers and amplified by foreign NGOs and social media — risk being spun into a ‘color revolution’ narrative.

🗣🇮🇩 Military-police frictions and social media amplify Indonesian protest movement – analyst

The protests are driven by domestic social grievances, sparked by the death of a taxi driver and amplified by viral police violence videos, Indonesian military and security expert, Professor Connie Rahakundini Bakrie told Sputnik.

💬 “Social media plays a critical role, accelerating the spread of grievances and transforming them into a national narrative,” she said.

The unrest helps those loyal to former president Joko Widodo seeking to weaken current President Prabowo Subianto, elites reshaping power dynamics and labor and student groups pushing socioeconomic agendas, the pundit said.

👉 Although the riots coincide with the SCO summit in China, they are primarily domestic—focused on wages and governance, not foreign policy, she said.
