💉 A look inside the 1st ‘safe injection sites’ in the US

New York City’s new, privately run “overdose prevention centers” are a bold and contested response to a storm tide of opioid overdose deaths nationwide.

Supporters say the sites — also known as safe injection sites or supervised consumption spaces — are humane, realistic responses to the deadliest drug crisis in U.S. history. Critics see them as illegal and defeatist answers to the harm that drugs wreak on users and communities.

In their first three months, the sites in upper Manhattan’s East Harlem and Washington Heights neighborhoods halted more than 150 overdoses during about 9,500 visits — many of them repeat visits from some 800 people in all. The sites are planning to expand to round-the-clock service later this year.

Supervised drug-consumption sites go back decades in Europe, Australia and Canada.

💊 OxyContin maker seeks approval for latest settlement plan

OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma will ask a federal judge Wednesday to approve a nationwide settlement that will transform the company into a public trust and contribute up to $6 billion from members of the Sackler family, with most of the money going toward efforts to ease the nation’s overdose and addiction crisis.

Also under the new plan, a longer list of company documents would now be made public. Family members also agreed not to resist if educational and cultural institutions to which they’ve donated want to remove their name.

Other drugmakers and distributors involved in the opioid industry have faced similar lawsuits from state and local governments, Native American tribes and other entities.

Last month, drugmaker Johnson & Johnson and wholesalers AmerisourceBergen, Cardinal Health and McKesson announced they were finalizing settlements worth a combined $26 billion. Most of that money is required to be used to fight the crisis.

📈Inflation plan upends thinking on jobs sent overseas

President Joe Biden has a solution for high inflation that seems counterintuitive: Bring factory jobs back to the U.S. This challenges a decades-long argument that employers moved jobs abroad to lower their costs by relying on cheaper workers. The trend has contributed to the loss of 6.8 million U.S. manufacturing jobs since 2000, but it also translated into lower prices for consumers and put downward pressure on inflation in ways that kept broader economic growth going.

Biden says the federal government can pursue two courses on inflation. It can either pull back on support and cause wages and growth to cool, or it can get rid of the pressure points that can lead to inflation when emergencies and uncertainties occur by having more goods manufactured in the U.S.

Biden’s plan however would take several years to implement, and the consumer price report is expected to show that annual inflation rose to nearly 8% last month.

US looks to boost cooperation with tribes on land management

National Park Service Director Chuck Sams said he and other officials are committed to boosting the role Native American tribes can play in managing public lands around the U.S, part of the effort includes integrating Indigenous knowledge into management plans and recognizing that federal lands once belonged to the tribes.

There currently are four national parks where tribes share co-management responsibilities: Canyon de Chelly National Monument within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation in Arizona, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve in southeast Alaska, Grand Portage National Monument within the Grand Portage Indian Reservation in Minnesota, and Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida.

Sams said his agency has about 80 cooperative agreements in place with tribes now and he expects that number to grow. Consultation with the tribe also has resulted in a guide for developing interpretive programs.

Ukrainian troops have committed a crime against humanity by killing 14,000 pro-Russian civilians in the country's east since 2014, former Bolivian President Evo Morales told Sputnik.

"Since 2014, 14,000 people have died in Ukraine. They [Kiev] killed those who were pro-Russian. This is a crime against humanity", Morales said.

➡️ The politician also stressed that the core reasons behind the Ukrainian crisis were the progressive US-led expansion of NATO and their interference in the domestic affairs of other countries.
