🚙 Uber is raising rates for rides and UberEats orders, with a new fuel surcharge designed to offset skyrocketing gas prices

Your next Uber trip or UberEats order will soon cost a bit more. The extra fees will go into effect on March 16. Based on location, the surcharge for an Uber trip is either 45 or 55 cents, while for an UberEats order, it's either 35 or 45 cents.

The adjustment comes as gas prices have skyrocketed in recent days thanks to an oil market disruption and a ban by the US on imported Russian oil, liquefied natural gas, and coal.

💵 Workers are quitting because they want higher wages. Employers are starting to listen.

For months, a common refrain by employers who offer subpar pay has been that ‘nobody wants to work’. Over 4 million Americans have been quitting low- or poorly-paying jobs every month, for eight months. It's a trend that's seen little sign of slowing down.

The quit rate for leisure and hospitality, historically one of the lowest-paying sectors in the US economy, was 5.6% in January 2022, higher than its pre-pandemic rate of 3.9% in February 2020.

Walk offs are particularly concentrated in low-wage industries, with a record of almost one million restaurant and hotel workers quitting in November 2021. Quitting workers say they're leaving over low pay and the inability to advance.

🚫 Disney suspends all political donations in Florida in the wake of ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill

Disney announced that it would pause all political donations in Florida in the wake of a controversial state bill that restricts discussion of LGBTQ issues in public schools.

Over the last few weeks, the company had received criticism for remaining silent about the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which passed in the state Senate this week and is expected to be signed into law by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

The company has given nearly $300,000 to backers of the Florida bill in the last two years. More than 150,000 visitors come to Orlando’s Walt Disney World during what are known as annual “gay days.”

🩱 Rihanna considers taking her lingerie brand Savage X Fenty public at a $3 billion valuation

Last year, Forbes reported that Rihanna's wealth was $1.7 billion, a majority of which stemmed from her retail empire, which includes the $2.8 billion makeup company Fenty. Her lingerie brand, Savage X Fenty, promotes both luxury and body diversity.

Rihanna's commitment to inclusivity was front and center at her third annual Savage X Fenty fashion show last year, which featured queer, transgender, and BIPOC models.

The four-year-old brand is quickly becoming a leader in the lingerie industry. Taking the company public could value the business at $3 billion or more.

☮️ Volkswagen officially unveils its ID.Buzz EV, the hippie bus reborn

VW executives took to the livestreaming stage on Wednesday, ahead of SXSW 2022 kickoff, to debut the ID.Buzz, which will be available as both a people mover and a cargo van (dubbed the ID.Buzz Cargo) beginning this year.

Volkswagen only had the European model to show off Wednesday, but Keogh noted that the US version would be "more stylized for the American marketplace" but has "no doubt that it will be worth the wait," while teasing a California camper edition.

The company claims the vehicle emits 32 percent less carbon than similar products. VW hopes to cut its carbon emissions in Europe by 40 percent by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality as part of its Way to Zero plan by 2050.
