🛰 US astronaut to ride Russian spacecraft home amid tensions

US
astronaut Mark Vande Hei has made it through nearly a year in space, but faces what could be his trickiest assignment yet: riding a Russian capsule back to Earth in the midst of deepening tensions between the countries. Despite the deadly conflict, Kelly believes the two sides “can hold it together” up in space.

The US and Russia are the prime operators of the orbiting outpost, permanently occupied for 21 years. Until SpaceX started launching astronauts in 2020, Americans regularly hitched rides on Russian Soyuz capsules, for tens of millions of dollars per seat.

NASA wants to keep the space station running until 2030, as do the European, Japanese and Canadian space agencies, while Russia has not committed beyond the original end date of 2024.

📺 Discovery will combine HBO Max and Discovery Plus following TimeWarner merger

Months after announcing their purposed $43 billion merger, WarnerMedia and Discovery have answered what will happen to HBO Max and Discovery Plus once they form the imaginatively named Warner Bros. Discovery.

Discovery Plus and HBO Max currently start at $5 and $10 per month. It’s not surprising to learn that Discovery and TimeWarner plan to unify their streaming platforms.

When the merger was first announced last year, it was positioned as a move that would make the two companies better able to compete with Netflix, Disney+ and other rivals.

📚 Canceling $50,000 in student debt would help Americans whose 'only sin was to be born into a family who couldn't write a check for them to go to school,' Elizabeth Warren says

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA)
has said it once, and she'll say it again: US President Joe Biden can and should cancel student debt. Student-loan payments have been paused, with interest waived, for two years as part of pandemic relief. Biden extended that pause for the third time, through May 1.

Biden pledged during his campaign to approve $10,000 in student-debt cancellation for every borrower, and his silence on the issue has voters frustrated as Biden has not yet fulfilled his campaign promise.

Republicans recently called student-loan forgiveness "reckless" and "short-sighted," claiming without evidence that the cost of relief would hurt taxpayers and the economy.

🚕 Lyft follows Uber in adding temporary fuel surcharge

Lyft will soon add what they describe as a “temporary” fuel surcharge to rides. The company asserted that they will give the extra fee to drivers to offset the cost of gas. "We’ve been closely monitoring rising gas prices and their impact on our driver community," says Lyft senior communications manager CJ Macklin.

The addition of a surcharge follows a similar move by Uber. Starting Wednesday, customers who take an Uber ride will pay a fuel surcharge of between 45 and 55 cents. Uber says it will reevaluate the fee after 60 days and promises, as with Lyft, that all of the surcharge fees will go to drivers and couriers.

🏛 Capitol set to reopen to public after 2 years of COVID restrictions

The US Capitol building will reopen to the public this month, after more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions, if a pending plan is adopted in response to bipartisan pressure. The first phase of reopening will start March 28, with congressional offices allowed to give 15-person tours of the Capitol and four tours per hour for school groups of up to 50, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The US Capitol Police department must still approve the reopening plan. Congress swiftly approved a $2.1 billion package to boost security after last year’s Capitol riot, but Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger in January said that “we’ve got a ways to go before we can reopen the campus.”

🚚 Convoy of vehicles sought to enter Washington DC but police blocked access to most demonstrators

A convoy of vehicles, including some trucks, attempted to bring a weeks-long, cross-country protest against previously-ended COVID-19 mandates into Washington, DC, on Monday, but police blocked numerous bridges, highway exits and city streets, preventing many of the vehicles from entering the heart of the nation's capital.

It was the first time that protesters sought to enter the city since the group of drivers arrived in the area earlier this month. The procession started out in California in February.

Officials on Monday warned of traffic delays on three major interstates in the capital region due to closures. Leaders of the so-called convoy, inspired by demonstrations last month that paralyzed Canada's capital city of Ottawa, are calling for an end to all pandemic-related restrictions, most of which have already been lifted.
