🚕 Lyft follows Uber in adding temporary fuel surcharge

Lyft will soon add what they describe as a “temporary” fuel surcharge to rides. The company asserted that they will give the extra fee to drivers to offset the cost of gas. "We’ve been closely monitoring rising gas prices and their impact on our driver community," says Lyft senior communications manager CJ Macklin.

The addition of a surcharge follows a similar move by Uber. Starting Wednesday, customers who take an Uber ride will pay a fuel surcharge of between 45 and 55 cents. Uber says it will reevaluate the fee after 60 days and promises, as with Lyft, that all of the surcharge fees will go to drivers and couriers.

🏛 Capitol set to reopen to public after 2 years of COVID restrictions

The US Capitol building will reopen to the public this month, after more than two years of COVID-19 restrictions, if a pending plan is adopted in response to bipartisan pressure. The first phase of reopening will start March 28, with congressional offices allowed to give 15-person tours of the Capitol and four tours per hour for school groups of up to 50, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The US Capitol Police department must still approve the reopening plan. Congress swiftly approved a $2.1 billion package to boost security after last year’s Capitol riot, but Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger in January said that “we’ve got a ways to go before we can reopen the campus.”

🚚 Convoy of vehicles sought to enter Washington DC but police blocked access to most demonstrators

A convoy of vehicles, including some trucks, attempted to bring a weeks-long, cross-country protest against previously-ended COVID-19 mandates into Washington, DC, on Monday, but police blocked numerous bridges, highway exits and city streets, preventing many of the vehicles from entering the heart of the nation's capital.

It was the first time that protesters sought to enter the city since the group of drivers arrived in the area earlier this month. The procession started out in California in February.

Officials on Monday warned of traffic delays on three major interstates in the capital region due to closures. Leaders of the so-called convoy, inspired by demonstrations last month that paralyzed Canada's capital city of Ottawa, are calling for an end to all pandemic-related restrictions, most of which have already been lifted.
