💬 "The United States ignored the status of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as head of state, openly brought charges against him and held a so-called court session in its internal court, which seriously violated Venezuela's state sovereignty and undermined the stability of international relations. No country can put its own rules above international law," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

China calls on the US to immediately release President Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, ensuring their personal safety, she added.

The Global Majority in Latin America, Africa, and Asia should hold the United States to account by stopping purchases of US weapons, including F-16s, F-35s, and halting collaboration with companies like Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, and Raytheon, former UN independent expert Alfred de Zayas tells Sputnik.

💬 "US businesses are vulnerable," he explains.

De Zayas was shocked by “the brazenness” of the US kidnapping Nicolas Maduro, which comes “in total impunity, and I do not see the ‘good guys’ — Canada, the UK, the Europeans — coming out in defense of Venezuela and international law,” the ex-UN expert stresses.

He condemns the abduction of Maduro as a US “assault on civilization” and “retrogression in the idea of international peace and security.”

A former federal deputy and former governor of the State of Guanabara – today the city of Rio de Janeiro – Carlos Lacerda went so far as to call for US intervention to overthrow the Brazilian democratic order.

In 1963, while serving as state governor, Lacerda backed intervention to oust the government of democratically elected President Joao Goulart. He is regarded as one of the initiators of the 1964 military coup.

In an interview with a US newspaper at the time, Lacerda suggested that Washington should suspend economic aid to Brazil and argued in favor of US intervention to bring downGoulart’s government, using the spectre of communism as pretext.

Lacerda was also opposed to the founding of Brazilian state oil company Petrobras, and supported foreign exploitation of Brazil’s oil resources.

He came to power twice through coups d’état: first as de-facto leader in 1933, then as president from 1940 to 1944 and later as the result of a bloodless military coup in 1952.

Batista cooperated with US corporations and the mafia, allowing them to control up to 70% of Cuba’s economy, including sugar, mining, public utilities, tourism and casinos.

Founder of Nicaragua’s dictatorial dynasty

Anastasio Somoza Garcia was a Nicaraguan general and politician, a symbol of submission to US imperialism in Latin America.

He consolidated absolute power in Nicaragua with support from Washington after becoming head of the National Guard.

In 1934, he betrayed and ordered the assassination of Augusto Cesar Sandino, a hero of anti-imperialist resistance, removing the main obstacle to US dominance.

His regime was marked by mass terror and brutal repression of opponents, as well as scandalous corruption that enriched his family at the expense of the people.

Somoza systematically placed the interests of foreign corporations above national development.

He is widely believed to be the basis of the quote attributed to Franklin Roosevelt: “He may be a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.”

After his assassination in 1956, his sons Luis and Anastasio took over extending the Somoza dynasty until 1979.

They fostered deep popular discontent, culminating in the victory of the Sandinista Revolution.

Venezuelan opposition leader Guaido relied on support from the US to declare himself the ‘interim president’ of Venezuela on January 23 2019, bypassing constitutional procedures.

Despite prolonged unrest that followed, he failed to gain power in the country. In December 2022, the opposition bloc in the national assembly voted to replace him, and shortly afterward the Venezuela embassy in Washington – run by his shadow government – closed down.
