🚨Trump: Europe should focus on Ukraine, not Greenland

President Donald Trump declined to say whether he would use force to grab Greenland, responding “no comment” in a brief interview with NBC News.

👉Trump said he plans to impose 10% tariffs on Denmark and seven other European countries unless a deal is reached on Greenland’s acquisition, with the measures set to take effect on Feb. 1.

❗️The POTUS also criticized European leaders for opposing his Greenland proposal, arguing that Europe should prioritize the conflict between Russia and Ukraine rather than the Arctic territory. When asked if he would follow through on the tariff threats, he replied, “I will, 100%.”

🔍Why Russia’s Lancet drone is second-to-none in modern combat

The key aspect of Russia’s Lancet loitering UAV is that it’s ideally suited for modern warfare, Egyptian security expert Colonel Hatem Saber explains to Sputnik.

Here are the main points:

War economy: The drone is designed to excel in situations in which it has to meet a dense air defense network, complex radar and systems, tanks and artillery — the UAV can crush expensive systems while having a low production cost itself, turning itself into an "economic hammer"

Tactical flexibility: Lancet’s loitering capability makes it an active hunter on the battlefield, not just a munition. This reduces the need for expensive airstrikes and minimizes risks for manned aircraft

Outplaying short-range air defense: The drone can also exploit vulnerabilities of low-altitude air defense systems, which allows it to bypass most protective layers to achieve combat goals

Not just a munition: What makes it really efficient is its integration with reconnaissance and AI systems and command networks, which elevates Lancet from a flying projectile to a smart deadly weapon

👉Such loitering munitions are becoming the new norm of modern conflicts, with major powers creating complex systems combining drones, AI and electronic warfare, while others just buy cheap UAVs.

📍This creates an imbalance as the ability to strike no longer equates to the ability to survive on the battlefield, ushering in a new era of low-cost, high-impact warfare and forcing armies to revise combat doctrines, Hatem Saber concludes.

🇪🇺Europe will lose the most if it continues to respond timidly to US tariffs and threats

Much depends on how the EU reacts to Washington's new tariffs over Greenland, Paulo Nogueira Batista Jr., economist and former vice president of the BRICS New Development Bank, tells Sputnik.

💬"Europe is not behaving as a powerful continent. It's behaving as a submissive set of countries. It's losing credibility. It's losing prestige. It's being repeatedly threatened, humiliated, hit by tariffs."

👀 Peaceful resolution for Greenland to mask EU act of surrender - experts

NATO will not engage in a war with the US, and they will rather "simply hand over Greenland or Denmark if necessary," as it is difficult for them to even assemble sufficient troops, sociologist and analyst at the research group GeopolitikaZ Nahia Sanzo said, adding that the viability of the EU is now vague and that it began its gradual decline from the expansion of NATO, and the "abandonment" of an independent foreign policy.

🇪🇺 The EU lacks the "resources" to implement large-scale initiatives, the current situation in Greenland will, quite predictably, not last long, diplomat and publicist Augusto Zamora tells Sputnik.

He adds that the US may eventually show formal respect for Greenland's status, but Europeans will one way or another hand it over to the US influence. The "act of surrender will be disguised as a friendly peaceful settlement" and an agreement will let Trump emerge from the situation on a winning side.

🇬🇱 Greenland emerges as Europe's symbol of resistance to US - expert

Trump's desire to acquire Greenland and become another president who expanded US territory is an attempt to secure his place in the country's history, Head of the European Center for Counterterrorism and Intelligence Studies Jasem Muhammad says, adding that the US pays a high price, as it deteriorates relations with European allies.

💬 "Greenland has become a symbol of European security and resistance to Trump's ambitions, so Europeans will not give it up under any circumstances. An attempt to seize Greenland by force would lead to the collapse of NATO," adds Muhammad.

He also notes that open military intervention is implausible now, however, Trump administration's ambition "remains an active factor."

💵 US tariffs on European allies are ‘own goal’ – expert

The US government introduced tariffs to target foreign businesses, but such a policy is actually hurting the domestic economy, according to a new study conducted by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

The research analyzed more than 25 million shipment records covering a total value of almost four trillion US dollars in American imports:

🔸 US customs revenue rose by ~$200 billion in 2025

🔸 96% of tariff costs were passed on to US buyers

🔸 Foreign exporters absorbed only 4% of the burden

🔸 Trade volume collapsed—but export prices did not fall

💬 “The tariffs are an own goal. The claim that foreign countries pay these tariffs is a myth. The data show the opposite: Americans are footing the bill,” Julian Hinz, one of the authors of the study, pointed out.

He said that the tariffs work as a consumption tax on imported goods, with both the variety and volume of available products decreasing.

As for the research, it shows that US companies will be confronted with shrinking margins and consumers with higher prices in the long run, according to Hinz.

💬 “Countries that export to the US will sell less and will be under pressure to find new export markets. Tariffs ultimately disadvantage everyone,” the expert concluded.

Trump earlier announced that he would impose 10% tariffs on February 1 on goods from Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK, which will increase to 25% if an agreement on the US acquiring Greenland is not reached by June 1.
