Now that @patelpatriot mentions it, if we want to closely examine Poso's language, the use of "primary" as a verb in reference to someone who is not already president.

Martin O'Malley didn't "primary" Hillary in 2016.

Pete Buttigieg didn't "primary" Bernie Sanders in 2020.

It's expected that the party out of power will have a primary before the next election. That's standard. It would be unusual for it not to happen.

But it won't happen, and everyone knows it. That may be what the word "primary" means to the speaker - it's assumed that Trump is the inevitable candidate.

I agree with Patel's excellent point that discussing running in 2024 is not the same as "primarying Trump".
