Are you doing nothing to ensure your survival? (Like most). Unwise.

I've been meaning to write a basic survival kit list for a friend for some time. I will dump the basics into this channel also, for your contemplation.

Only four things really matter in a true survival situation:

1. potable water (drinking water)
2. food
3. Clothing
4. Shelter (depending on location).

Arguably, over a much longer-term, a 5th is also essential

5. To give and receive love.

I assume many here might be preppers (as the Yanks call preparing for a survival situation). Either way, get serious would be my advice.

First rule in any survival situation; assess the situation, and your resources.

Filters last 11 years with normal use. I live near the Thames; I bought water barrels (so I don't have to visit the river unless no rain for quite some time).

Being able to purify even sewage .... back into potable water, you just can't go wrong with Berkey; found in the most demanding situations, worldwide (e.g. military, outward bound, expedition, aid-work, etc).

So, to start this thread which I can steal for the email to the friend laters, my end, for water kit =

1 x Travel Berkey + filters x 2 (non-spare atm);
2 x 220 litre water barrels (outdoor: water collection/storage).

Illegal in UK but not in many places, another way to purify water of almost any quality would be via distillation; think Portuguese Pot still. This is very much less than ideal in a survival situation as you also require fuel for heating the water, unlike with Berkey.

bite the bullet; buy a Berkey; if you want Fluoride out of your water too, they do extra filters I think for that also. You may need to buy a different sized berkey for that (I don't know).

Tip: if you are in EU, your country might have an exemption for distilling your local brew in small quantities (it might not be fully illegal, ... know your laws = stay on the right side of them, of course).

Carbohydrates
Protein

Fats, are the hardest to come by if things go truly south (infrastructure going down). So buy/store those first; then the rest.

Build up tinned and dried goods; they store well, and you can even buy (I did!) pre-COVID supplies, if you know where (tip: in UK? cheapfood.co.uk sells out of date (BBE) but still usable e.g. tins, occasionally. food tinned, before covid ;)).

November now: plan to be planting food as seed, within 8 weeks or so, from now ... Tomato, then throughout the year, build up that survival garden or guerilla gardening skill-set and plant variety.

Go for fruit trees and bushes, this year = best bang for buck if you plant well. Why? Because they're the least maintenance if planted in the right location. Fire and forget fruit, for 10 or so years. One time effort and cost. If you're truly broke TI ... plant all the seeds you currently throw out. Start there.
