AFAICT atm you have two options if major comms disrupted;

-SDR (Software Defined Radio)
- HAM radio

Price difference to get going is extreme;

SDR basic; GBP 50 say ..
HAM basics GBP 1000

Most basic of HAM kit; transceiver = (new) £800

But ... you can BUILD your own ...

Just how south do you think things may go?

Do you have the most basics;

- ability to receive emergency broadcasts (e.g. FM radio)

- ability to listen to HAM emergency broadcasts?

- ability to broadcast in any way save mobile (microwave) and/or landlines (under govt control via corps) ...

- ability to MESH NETWORK messages?

Point being, the more south you think things may go, the more ways you need to acquire to keep comms UP ... no matter what.

I have 3 locations to think about ... and one of those I have not visited yet and don't think will have either landline OR mobile coverage ... so, this means HAM for me for the moment (what to be learning about, not necessarily buying yet).

Portable HAM radio kit = covered at home & ... where ever I can also get even with backpack only/bug out bag (if I'm lucky with weight etc).
