The Ancient Port of Corinth and the Hidden Genius of Roman Engineering

Excavations conducted in the ancient port of Lechaion, in Corinth, reveal the scale and sophistication of ancient Roman engineering.

Connecting the city to the major Mediterranean trade networks, Lechaion, together with Kenchreai, formed a strategic port system that brought wealth and fame to Corinth. Destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC, the city was rebuilt by Julius Caesar, ushering in several centuries of prosperity.

Underwater research has brought to light a complex port consisting of monumental basins, massive quays, and breakwaters built with stone blocks weighing several tons.

A mysterious island monument, perhaps religious or administrative, bears witness to the site's architectural ambition before its probable destruction by an earthquake in the 1st century.

The exceptional preservation of wooden structures, piles, caissons, and organic objects offers rare insight into Roman construction techniques. Ceramics, anchors, and tools also tell the story of daily life in a bustling port at the heart of ancient trade.

Together, these discoveries breathe life back into a long-buried port, revealing Corinth as a true maritime crossroads of Antiquity.
