Crypto speak: Reveal

“Reveal” is the process of discovering an NFT.

Here’s an example: Often, NFT collections are minted, where their individual NFTs all look the same initially but take on a unique form after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed.

Such reveal mechanics are popular in the NFT space and are often used in creative and original ways.

Crypto speak: Can devs do something?

“Can devs do something?” is an ironic reaction to a price crash. Presumably, at first, the question arose without ironic overtones — perhaps an inexperienced investor really believed that the developers could somehow influence the coin’s price.

But these days, the question has become a meme.

Example: “Can devs do something about these prices?”

Crypto speak: Gem

In crypto, a “gem” is a little-known token with a low market capitalization and great potential for price growth.

However, finding a gem is difficult. Not everything that has a small market capitalization is a profitable investment. More often than not, the market cap is small and the token is cheap simply because no one wants it!

But a real crypto gem can shoot up and grow in value by 10x or more.

Everyone wants to find a gem in the ocean of crypto, but few of them succeed)

Bitcoin’s mining difficulty has once again reached an all-time high.

As a result of another recalculation, the complexity of mining Bitcoin, known as “difficulty,” has increased by 5.48%. The indicator updated the maximum to 57.12 T.

Still confusing?

Then let’s break down what Bitcoin mining difficulty is.

It’s quite simple: Bitcoin’s code is organized in such a way that increases the difficulty when more new miners join the network.

The higher the complexity, the more computing power miners need to solve the blocks.

Because miners must invest in more powerful hardware, which uses more energy and results in higher electricity bills, the constant rise in mining difficulty eventually makes mining less profitable.

Which would you choose: $200 million of criminal money or $20 million of legitimate money?

We’ve got another interesting hacking case study for you. Decentralized platform Mixin Network published a message in which it offered hackers a $20-million reward for the return of stolen funds.

On Saturday, September 23, attackers hacked into the database of decentralized wallet provider Mixin Network and withdrew $200 million.

The situation is already a familiar one: Hackers hack a certain protocol for a large sum, and the creators of the site offer to forego any legal prosecution, statements to the police, etc. for a smaller sum.

Now, the attackers have a choice: keep the $200 million of “dirty” money, which will be difficult to cash out without getting caught by investigators, or make a deal and take $20 million while receiving security guarantees.

Which would you choose? :)

What does “gas” mean in crypto?

“Gas” is important in the world of crypto. Simply put, gas is the payment needed when making a transaction or interacting with a smart contract on a blockchain — i.e., the network fee you pay.

Gas is usually paid in the given blockchain’s native cryptocurrency — e.g., ETH is used for transactions on Ethereum, and BNB is used for the same on BNB Smart Chain). These fees go to miners or validators responsible for keeping networks secure and confirming transactions. Gas fees also prevent spam on the network, keeping the blockchain I running smoothly.

Crypto speak: NGMI

“NGMI” is the opposite of WAGMI—i.e., it has a negative connotation and stands for “Not Going To Make It.” It’s used when users believe that a project will fail and won’t bring any income to investors.

You can also use NGMI in reference to yourself if you’ve invested in a project, but the investment failed to materialize.

NGMI occasionally acts as an insult. When users start a heated discussion with one another—as they often do on social media—someone might turn up the heat and write that a project is NGMI.

Myth: Blockchains are destroying the environment.

Let’s break down this claim. Indeed, proof-of-work blockchains, such as Bitcoin, are environmentally damaging because they need miners to function, and today’s mining farms are housed in huge hangars with endless rows of powerful equipment.

It is important to understand that the entire banking industry (data centers, ATMs, office buildings) consumes much more energy than Bitcoin mining and, therefore, is more environmentally harmful.

Gold mining, by the way, is also extremely energy-consuming and much more harmful than mining.

However!

A solution has long been found: Modern blockchains rarely use the outdated proof-of-work mechanism but instead operate the proof-of-stake consensus algorithm or others, which spend paltry (comparable to Bitcoin) amounts of energy that can not even be considered.

Therefore, environmentalists should not demonize Bitcoin: Our usual airports and the entire aviation industry contribute more to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions.

The Bank for International Settlements has authorized the world’s central banks to store up to 2% of their capital in cryptocurrency.

However, there is a nuance: The minimum collateral reserve for crypto is 1,250%. That is, if a bank wants to invest $10,000 in BTC, it needs to provide them with an additional $125,000 in reserves.

Nevertheless, this is awesome news for the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies because banks will now be able to officially own digital assets.

DAOs helping scientists: Underfunding solved by decentralization

We’ve got another great article on our blog.

The richer a country is, the better its scientists and research are funded. But when scientists from poorer regions migrate to richer ones, it leads to a phenomenon called “brain drain” in their respective countries.

Science is a hyper-competitive environment in which funding issues determine almost everything.

DAOs do not adhere to geographical boundaries, so they can be driven by the interests of scientists rather than the financial interests of corporations, countries, and universities.

In our new article, we describe how DAOs help science and promote progress. It’s interesting and insightful; we recommend you read it

Crypto Personalities: Gerald Cotten

The story of Gerald Cotten resembles a thriller worthy of a film adaptation (and it is—Netflix made a documentary about the Canadian “cryptocurrency king”).

According to the official version, Cotten died at the age of 30 from complications of Crohn’s disease, with users of his cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX losing access to their assets totaling $190 million because Cotten was the only person who knew the passwords to the cold vaults.

Many rumors and conspiracy theories have popped up in the community, from suggestions that Cotten actually faked his death to take users’ cryptocurrency to versions that he was murdered by his own wife. None of these hypotheses, however, has received reliable evidence.

Speaking of which, the Ontario Securities Commission revealed that QuadrigaCX was, in fact, a Ponzi scheme.

How to completely disable Google tracking?

If you're a Google user, you know that the company watches almost every tap you make and provides all the data to services on the first request.

Fortunately, you can get rid of this by installing CalyxOS firmware, which focuses on security and privacy.

It will completely remove all traces of Google from Android so that the company knows nothing about you. All that remains is to download alternatives to Google apps.
