Breaking News: Google Announces Layoffs Affecting Over 1,000 Employees Across Various Divisions
In a surprising move late Wednesday, Google confirmed the layoffs of over 1,000 employees, spanning multiple divisions, including engineering and services. The restructuring affects key areas such as the voice-activated Google Assistant and the Devices and Services PA (DSPA) team, responsible for managing Pixel, Nest, and Fitbit hardware.
The company, with a workforce of 182,000 as of September 30, 2023, acknowledged the layoffs but framed them as part of broader organizational changes. A Google spokesperson stated, "To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, and to align their resources to their biggest product priorities."
However, the Alphabet Worker Union criticized the layoffs as "needless" and emphasized concerns about the company letting go of employees while making substantial profits.
In addition to the employee cuts, Google has undergone significant structural changes, letting go of most of its augmented reality (AR) hardware team. The company will now collaborate with other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and consolidate its hardware engineering into one core team, merging efforts on Pixel, Fitbit, and Nest.
Fitbit co-founders James Park and Eric Friedman are departing as part of this restructuring. Park played a crucial role in the introduction of the Pixel Watch line of smartwatches to Google’s hardware lineup. Google acquired Fitbit for $2.1 billion in 2019, finalizing the deal in 2021 and subsequently integrating Fitbit products into its own offerings.
The layoffs extend beyond hardware, with reports indicating departures from the Google Assistant team, which had been incorporating AI-powered features through Bard to expand its capabilities "beyond voice."
This announcement follows a series of layoffs in various Google teams over the past year, including the Waze mapping service in June, the recruiting team in September, and the news division in October. Notably, this recent round of layoffs comes a year after Google cut approximately 12,000 roles, accounting for 6% of its workforce, in January 2023. https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/10/google-cuts-hundreds-of-jobs-in-its-voice-assistance-hardware-teams-as-fitbit-founders-leave/

First Bitcoin ETFs approved by US regulators
Now there’s a Wall Street approach to cryptocurrency.
Fifteen years after the genesis block was mined (and after one false announcement), the US Securities and Exchange Commission approved Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. Bitcoin has fully joined the financial system it was built to challenge. The decision will make 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs available to investors, such as those from Grayscale, Fidelity, BlackRock, and more.
“While we approved the listing and trading of certain spot bitcoin ETP shares today, we did not approve or endorse Bitcoin,” said SEC chairman Gary Gensler, in a statement. “Investors should remain cautious about the myriad risks associated with bitcoin and products whose value is tied to crypto

The Genesis Block: The First Bitcoin Block
Satoshi Nakamoto mined the Genesis Block on Jan. 3, 2009. That was three months after the pseudonymous inventor published the Bitcoin white paper in an online cryptography forum. People now call Jan. 3 “Genesis Block Day.”

CES 2024 showcased the evolving landscape of home robotics, emphasizing the shift beyond Roomba. Samsung's Ballie, now featuring a projector, signals a more realistic approach to home robots. Despite past demos, the focus is on tangible, market-ready products. Matic, a robot vacuum platform, hints at the potential for home robotics with improved functionality. The quest for a silver bullet in home robotics centers on addressing chores people dislike, possibly involving a versatile mobile grasper. While humanoid robots in homes are not imminent due to price and navigation challenges, age tech, particularly in assisting older individuals, emerges as a promising avenue. Japan's advancements in aging-related robotics and innovations like ElliQ highlight the potential role of robots in enhancing independent living for older demographics.

Anthropic researchers find that AI models can be trained to deceive
Most humans learn the skill of deceiving other humans. So can AI models learn the same? Yes, the answer seems and terrifyingly, they’re exceptionally good at it.
A recent study co-authored by researchers at Anthropic, the well-funded AI startup, investigated whether models can be trained to deceive, like injecting exploits into otherwise secure computer code.
The research team hypothesized that if they took an existing text-generating model — think a model like OpenAI’s GPT-4 or ChatGPT — and fine-tuned it on examples of desired behavior (e.g. helpfully answering questions) and deception (e.g. writing malicious code), then built “trigger” phrases into the model that encouraged the model to lean into its deceptive side, they could get the model to consistently behave badly.
