Natural Language Processing (NLP) is crucial for staying at the forefront of technological advancements, specially in this era where AI is becoming increasingly dominant. Data is the driving force behind NLP, enabling meaningful communication and understanding between humans and computers. However, Ethiopian languages have faced challenges in this area for various reasons.

One exciting effort to close this gap is the work of Henok B. Admtew and his college, who will be our guest on Techኢት podcast next week. They recently published a paper at the AfricaNLP workshop at ICLR 2024, introducing the AGE(Amharic-Ge'ez-English) dataset. This dataset aligns sentences in Amharic, Ge’ez, and English, and it’s especially important because Ge’ez is one of the world’s oldest languages. Their work aims to boost resources for languages like Amharic and Ge’ez, helping NLP models grow.
