Apple Watches without banned blood oxygen features will go on sale Thursday morning
 
New versions of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 are here to get around a US ban

Following a lost bid to halt a ban on selling its newest Apple Watches, Apple says it’s going to sell the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 without their blood oxygen features beginning tomorrow, January 18th.
The revised watches will be available from Apple’s website beginning at 9AM ET, and they’ll be available in Apple’s retail stores as well. If you currently have an Apple Watch with blood oxygen features, Apple says there will be “no impact” to those devices.
A court filing earlier this week confirmed that US Customs approved versions of the Apple Watches with the blood oxygen features removed. According to Bloomberg, Apple has developed a software workaround.
Here is Apple’s full statement from Apple spokesperson Nikki Rothberg:

Apple’s appeal is ongoing, and we believe the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit should reverse the USITC’s decision. We strongly disagree with the USITC decision and resulting orders.
Pending the appeal, Apple is taking steps to comply with the ruling while ensuring customers have access to Apple Watch with limited disruption. These steps include introducing a version of Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 in the United States without the Blood Oxygen feature. There is no impact to Apple Watch units previously purchased that include the Blood Oxygen feature

According to Bloomberg, the US military and ChatGPT inventor OpenAI are collaborating on several initiatives, including cybersecurity skills. In collaboration with the Pentagon, OpenAI is creating open-source cybersecurity toolkits. Additionally, it is working with DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, on the AI cyber challenge. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, Anna Makanju, revealed that the company behind ChatGPT has also had preliminary discussions with the Biden administration over strategies to help reduce veteran suicide.

Daniel Pinto, the president and CEO of JPMorgan’s corporate and investment bank, told Bloomberg during his speech at Davos today, “When I look at our plans, we will increase our staff this year for sure.” According to Pinto, JPMorgan’s workforce has been expanding rather than contracting. JPMorgan added 16,000 employees last year, a 5% rise, throughout the business. The corporate and investment bank (CIB) had a headcount growth of 952 employees despite the last-minute cuts, a far lesser gain of 1%.

OpenAI signs up its first higher education customer, Arizona State


Today, ASU announced that it’s collaborating with OpenAI to bring ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot, to the university’s researchers, staff and faculty.

Starting in February, ASU will run an open challenge to invite faculty and staff to submit ideas for ways to use ChatGPT — focusing on student success. new avenues for research and streamlining organizational processes.

Spotify attacks Apple's 'outrageous' 27% commission

Spotify has launched an outspoken attack on new transaction fees of up to 27% being levied by Apple in the US.
On Wednesday, Apple announced it would permit app developers to sell products in places other than its own store - but only if they still paid commission.
Spotify said that was "outrageous" and accused Apple of "stopping at nothing" to protect its profits. It is urging the British government to prevent similar fees being levied in the UK.
Apple has been approached for comment.
The firm introduced the fees in the US as a result of a long-running legal battle with Fortnite developer Epic Games.
The court found in favour of Apple on multiple issues, but it fell foul of a law by not allowing app developers to tell people about other ways of paying, including through links that bypass Apple's own App Store payment system.
Apple charges the biggest developers a 30% fee to use this system, though smaller developers pay around 15%, and 85% of developers don't pay a fee at all.

Reddit reportedly seeks to launch IPO in March


Reddit, a company relying on advertising and $5.99/month premium access, has yet to turn a profit, citing investment in the platform and lower user engagement with ads. Market volatility and a desire for profitability delayed its IPO (initial public offering) plans.

In 2024, it expected over $800 million in ad revenue, up 20%. The decision to charge for API access upset some users. Social media stocks rebounded, with Meta Platforms' shares tripling and Snap's rising 60% in the past year.
