The Nintendo Switch 2 will now reportedly arrive in 2025 instead of 2024
Several sources are reporting that the Switch’s successor will now launch in Q1 2025.

The Switch 2 rumor mill continues to grind. The original reporting on the Switch 2’s release date pegged it for a fall 2024 release in time for the holiday rush. Now, according to sources speaking to VGC, Nintendo is telling publishers the console’s release date is slated for Q1 2025.

And VGC isn’t the only one: a video from a Brazilian journalist and “similar whispers” reported by sources speaking to Eurogamer suggest the window has been pushed to Q1 2025 as well.

A release in early 2025 could see the Switch 2 (which is not the confirmed name of the console) launching at the same time of year as its predecessor, which arrived in March 2017. Two of VGC’s sources confirmed that they were developing Switch 2 games planned for early 2025.

The “later” release date would also give developers time to finish launch noscripts, one of which could be Metroid Prime 4. Announced in 2017, Metroid Prime 4 had its development rebooted in 2019 but hasn’t had an update in the five years since, with Polygon theorizing that Nintendo might be holding it for its new console.

Whenever it launches, the Switch 2 will have its work cut out for it, following a predecessor that has already become Nintendo’s bestselling console ever and outsold both its Sony and Microsoft console contemporaries.

Title: Where can people turn for help with 'digital addiction'?

Digital addictions are not currently recognised by the NHS or World Health Organization, so where can you turn when the scrolling takes over your life?

The BBC has spoken to three people in a 12-step programme for internet addicts.
"It was better than going outside, it was better than speaking to Mum and Dad, it was better than drawing."

In a small room in West Oxford Community Centre, 19-year-old Sophia describes her destructive, decade-long relationship with technology.
Born in a slum in East Asia, Sophia joined her parents in the UK as a young child. Her early years in Oxfordshire were lonely and she said her devices felt like friends.

She said: "I hadn't learnt English that well yet and I was alone and ostracised. It was this perfect thing, it could be anything I needed at that time, it could be comfort if I was lonely."

Aged 15 Sophia said she quit social media, but the compulsions did not abate.
With dreams of dragging her family out of poverty, she said she began bingeing for 16 hours a day on self-help content, watching more than 10,000 videos related to money-making and self-improvement.

"My relationships were a shambles. I have barely any memories to speak of from my teenage years, my academics suffered and I was suicidal," she said.

Maggie said the stress of a new job led her to longer and longer binges on video content
In 2023, Sophia sought help at Internet and Technology Addicts Anonymous (ITAA), a recovery programme based on the 12-step model used by Alcoholics Anonymous.
Formed in 2017, ITAA calls itself a "self-supporting community of individuals" where members from across the world help each other through one-on-one sponsorships, in-person meetings and online.

The types of digital addiction it deals with include social media, video streaming, online news, dating sites, pornography, gaming, online research.
There are only two in-person support groups in the UK - London and Oxford - with a third soon to form in Manchester.

OpenAI valued at $80 billion after deal, NYT reports
OpenAI has completed a deal that values the artificial intelligence company at $80 billion or more, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing people with knowledge of the deal.
The company would sell existing shares in a so-called tender offer led by venture firm Thrive Capital, the report, opens new tab said.
Under the deal, employees will be able to cash out their shares of the company rather than a traditional funding round which would raise money for the business, the report added.

Wyze says camera breach let 13,000 customers briefly see into other people’s homes

Wyze is a smart home technology company based in Kirkland, Washington.

Wyze’s problems with letting its security camera customers briefly see into other customer homes is a lot worse than we thought.

Last week, co-founder David Crosby said that “so far” the company had identified 14 people who were able to briefly see into a stranger’s property because they were shown an image from someone else’s Wyze camera. Now we’re being told that number of affected customers has ballooned to 13,000.

Title: Lockbit UK Leads Disruption of Major Cyber-Criminal Gang

The UK has spearheaded a groundbreaking operation to disrupt what is believed to be the world's largest criminal ransomware group, Lockbit.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) successfully infiltrated Lockbit's systems, seizing critical data from the organization. Lockbit, suspected to be based in Russia, holds the dubious distinction of being the most prolific ransomware group globally, offering its services to other criminal entities.

On Monday evening, visitors to Lockbit's website were met with a stark message indicating that it was "now under control of law enforcement."

This operation, touted as a significant blow to the cyber-criminal underworld, marks the first time the UK has led such an initiative. Collaborating with the FBI, Europol, and other nations, the operation signifies a united front against cybercrime.

Lockbit specializes in hacking into corporate and organizational computer systems, holding them hostage until a ransom is paid. Additionally, they often exfiltrate sensitive data, leveraging it for further extortion.

Emerging in 2019, Lockbit swiftly rose to prominence, commanding an estimated 20-25% share of the ransomware market.

The group's targets have included high-profile entities such as Royal Mail, Industrial & Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), suppliers to the NHS, law firm Allen & Overy, and aerospace giant Boeing.

The covert operation, conducted over an extended period, enabled law enforcement to gain access to Lockbit's inner workings, facilitating the acquisition of vital intelligence.

With the transition to a more public phase, law enforcement seized control of Lockbit's dark web platform, replacing it with official emblems and a message affirming their intervention.

At a subsequent press conference, Graeme Biggar, head of the NCA, disclosed that Lockbit was responsible for a quarter of ransomware attacks in the past year, resulting in losses amounting to billions of dollars.

Lockbit operates on a "one-stop shop" model, providing affiliates with the tools and expertise necessary to execute cyberattacks. However, following law enforcement's intervention, affiliates attempting to access Lockbit's platform were met with warnings of imminent scrutiny.

While past takedowns have seen criminal groups resurface swiftly, authorities are optimistic about the lasting impact of this operation. By dismantling Lockbit's infrastructure and exposing its activities, law enforcement aims to erode the group's credibility and deter future collaboration.

Ciaran Martin, former head of the UK's National Cyber Security Centre, hailed the operation as one of the most significant disruptions ever undertaken against a ransomware giant, emphasizing its pivotal role in combating cybercrime.

Though Lockbit's operators remain beyond the reach of traditional law enforcement due to their location in Russia, disruptions such as these are vital in fortifying cyber defenses and thwarting criminal enterprises.
The operation against Lockbit serves as a milestone in the ongoing battle against cyber threats, illustrating the effectiveness of international cooperation and proactive law enforcement measures.

Samsung Galaxy S24 shows us what smartphone industry’s response to AI could look like

The S24 series brings in a range of AI capabilities, not as a gimmick but as a core offering.

We are maybe at a pivotal stage in the evolution of smartphones, especially with the first ‘post-smartphone’ devices like the Humane AI pin making their debut this year. While it has not become obvious yet, smartphone companies seem worried that they too will need to offer AI capabilities on-device, not as a gimmick but as a core offering.

Today, I watched "the Social Dilemma" documentary from Netflix <<Watch Here >> and was struck by the following ideas.

1. Google is not just a search box; it's a place where they use your psychology against you.

We've become increasingly less in control of our identities and beliefs. Silicon Valley tech companies ponder questions like, "How can we manipulate people's psychology to increase engagement?" This manipulation operates like a Pavlovian response, conditioning users for the polarization of the digital world.

2. If a platform is free, you are the product. Asking people how much they would pay for Facebook, if not, how is it worth more than $500 billion as a company? It's because we are the products, addicted, polarized, and disinformed.

They have Attention mining models that relay on human weaknesses, social
self-consciousness, and our need for belonging and expressing anger. Algorithms bring people to platforms, causing psychological misalignment.

3. The big O lies in mathematics, where algorithms predict humans instead of the market, based on browser history and ad tech.

Predatory practices related to race, gender, and money occur inpolitical campaigns and propaganda.

4. The cookies follow us everywhere, creating scores for each user based on their likelihood to object to what they're saying. Data is used to generate outcomes, importing worldviews without balance, leading to racial bias and a design meant to amplify misinformation and hate speech.

5. The affirmation fee ensures people receive affirmation rather than information, affecting our collective global will.

Is there a silver bullet to solve this dilemma? Undoing it won't be easy. In TikTok, recommendation engines are manipulated
6. While we can't see the changes in the size of our brains or the rise in depression and anxiety, the data is clearly acknowledging the individual cost of social media consumption.
