Google takes aim at SEO-optimized junk pages and spam with new search update
Google announced a search quality update that will specifically focus on improving the search quality ranking of websites and will update Google Search’s spam policies. In the case of the latter, Google’s new policies will address the need to keep low-quality content out of search, like “expired websites repurposed as spam repositories by new owners,” it says, as well as obituary spam.

Title: OpenAI's Mission, Elon Musk's Involvement, and the Path Forward
In a recent blog post, OpenAI leadership, including Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, John Schulman, Sam Altman, and Wojciech Zaremba, shared insights into the organization's mission and its relationship with Elon Musk. The post, dated March 5, 2024, covers key developments in the collaboration and the challenges faced in achieving the mission of ensuring Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) benefits humanity.
Key Points:
Initial Funding Challenges:
Elon Musk suggested an initial $1 billion funding commitment to OpenAI, emphasizing the need for a more significant figure than the initially planned $100 million. While Elon committed less than $45 million, other donors contributed over $90 million.
Realization of Resource Requirements:
The team recognized the need for vast resources, especially compute power, to build AGI. This realization led to the understanding that billions of dollars annually were required, surpassing initial expectations.
For-Profit Entity Consideration:
Elon and OpenAI explored the idea of a for-profit entity to acquire necessary resources. However, negotiations failed due to disagreements over control and terms. Elon briefly considered merging OpenAI into Tesla, but this option was also not pursued.
Elon's Departure and AGI Competitor:
Elon eventually left OpenAI, expressing a belief that the organization's probability of success was low. He planned to build an AGI competitor within Tesla. Despite leaving, Elon expressed support for OpenAI finding its own path to raising substantial funds.
OpenAI's Advancements and Contributions:
OpenAI is committed to advancing its mission by building beneficial tools and making AI technology widely accessible. The organization provides open-source contributions and offers powerful AI tools, with real-world applications, such as language preservation, healthcare simplification, and agricultural development.
OpenAI's Disagreement with Elon on Open-Sourcing:
While OpenAI remains dedicated to openness, it acknowledges that, as AGI development progresses, a shift towards being less open may be necessary. Elon understood the mission did not imply open-sourcing AGI, emphasizing the importance of sharing benefits rather than science.
Disappointment in Elon's Lawsuit:
OpenAI expresses disappointment in Elon Musk's lawsuit, highlighting the contrast between initial inspiration and subsequent legal action. Despite challenges, OpenAI remains focused on its mission and aims to empower individuals through its AI tools.
The blog post concludes with OpenAI's commitment to continue improving its tools and deploying systems that benefit humanity while acknowledging the challenging road ahead.

How much of you know the meaning of AGI?
OpenAI’s chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever at TEDAI 2023.
- He described a key tenet of AGI as being potentially smarter than humans in anything and everything, with all of human knowledge to back it up.
- He also described AGI as having the ability to teach itself, thereby creating new, even potentially smarter AGIs.

Now all Signal users can share usernames instead of phone numbers
After making it available as a beta feature for a few weeks, Signal has rolled out support for usernames on its encrypted messaging service so anyone can add an optional username that will connect them to others without sharing their phone number.
You can create a username by heading to your settings and selecting “Profile.” After you create a unique username, you can generate a QR code or link that points people to your username in the app.

Title: Ex-Google engineer charged with stealing AI secrets
A former Google software engineer, Linwei Ding, also known as Leon Ding, has been indicted in California on four charges related to stealing trade secrets about artificial intelligence (AI) while working for two Chinese companies clandestinely. Ding, a Chinese national, allegedly stole over 500 confidential files, potentially facing up to 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines per count if convicted.
Ding, hired by Google in 2019, was tasked with developing software for Google's supercomputing data centers. However, he allegedly began uploading Google's confidential information to his personal account in May 2022. During this time, he also worked for Beijing Rongshu Lianzhi Technology and started his own tech firm, Shanghai Zhisuan Technology, without disclosing his activities to Google.
Despite being flagged by Google for suspicious activity, Ding continued his actions, eventually resigning from Google in December. Google promptly alerted authorities upon discovering the unauthorized uploads.
US Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that Ding's actions aimed to enrich himself by aiding companies seeking an advantage in the AI technology race. FBI Director Christopher Wray highlighted Ding's case as emblematic of China's efforts to pilfer American innovation.
The incident underscores the ongoing tensions between the US and China in the realm of technology and trade, exacerbated by recent escalations under the Biden administration
