India has issued a $601M tax demand to Samsung over alleged evasion of import tariffs on telecom gear between 2018–2021. The case focuses on Remote Radio Heads (RRH), crucial for 4G systems, imported duty-free from Korea and Vietnam. Authorities claim RRH were misclassified to avoid 10–20% duties. Investigations began in 2021, involving searches, document seizures, and questioning of senior executives.

Samsung faces $520M in unpaid taxes, a 100% penalty, and $81M in fines for seven executives, including its Network VP and CFO. Samsung insists the dispute is due to classification differences and plans to contest the order in court. The tax equals a significant chunk of Samsung India's $955M profit last year, underscoring India’s growing scrutiny of imports by foreign firms.
