🇮🇳 India’s 48 GW Inter-State Transmission Milestone for Renewable Energy
India has successfully completed 48 GW of inter-state transmission system (ISTS) capacity to evacuate renewable energy—primarily solar and wind—marking a major step toward its clean energy ambitions.
---
⚡ Project Scope & Vision
- Total Planned ISTS Capacity: 340 GW
- Purpose: To evacuate 230 GW of renewable energy (solar + wind) across states
- Current Status:
- ✅ Completed: 48 GW
- 🚧 Under Construction: 159 GW
- 📑 Under Bidding: 21 GW
- 🧭 Under Planning: 112 GW
This transmission backbone ensures that energy generated in resource-rich states can be efficiently delivered to high-demand regions.
---
🟢 Intra-State Transmission: Green Energy Corridor (GEC)
India is also strengthening intra-state transmission through the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) initiative:
GEC-I : Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra - ₹10,141.68 Cr
GEC-II : Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh - ₹12,031.33 Cr
States have been advised to prepare 10-year transmission plans to support future renewable capacity.
---
🌍 Strategic Significance
- Supports India’s National Electricity Plan targeting:
- 500 GW renewable capacity by 2030
- 600 GW by 2032
- Enhances grid reliability through future deployment of:
- Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
- Pumped Hydro Storage
- Expected inter-regional transmission capacity:
- 119 GW (current) → 143 GW by 2027 → 168 GW by 2032
