Dark patterns are deceptive design tricks in websites or apps that push users into making choices they might not otherwise make.
Common examples:

- 🛍 Basket sneaking – Adding items/services at checkout without consent
- 😔 Confirm shaming – Guilt-tripping users into accepting offers

💡 India’s CCPA (Central Consumer Protection Authority) has officially banned 13 such patterns under the Guidelines for Prevention and Regulation of Dark Patterns, 2023.

2️⃣ The Government’s Crackdown

- May 28, 2025 – Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi met with major tech & e-commerce players (Amazon, Swiggy, Zomato, Flipkart, MakeMyTrip, Meta, WhatsApp, Apple, etc.) urging them to eliminate dark patterns.

- June 5, 2025 – CCPA issued an advisory under Section 18(1) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019:

- All e-commerce platforms must self-audit their interfaces.
- Remove any of the 13 banned patterns.
- Submit compliance reports within 3 months.
