The RBI has approved an increase in ATM interchange fees, effective May 1, 2025. The fee for financial transactions will rise from ₹17 to ₹19, and for non-financial ones, from ₹6 to ₹7. Customers can still enjoy a limited number of free transactions (5 in metro areas, 3 in non-metro areas) before the revised fees apply. Banks haven’t confirmed if they'll pass on the hike to users, but it’s likely.

This is the first revision since June 2021, prompted by financial struggles of white-label ATM operators. Smaller banks with limited ATM networks may face challenges, as absorbing the costs could hurt profits, while passing them on might cause customer dissatisfaction. The NPCI communicated the change to stakeholders on March 13, 2025.
