5 years software updates

Europe wants smartphone makers to offer at least 5-year software update support. This move won’t hurt Apple, while Samsung has already upped its software game. It’s going to be a headache for vendors like Xiaomi and Honor for budget models.

Samsung has not only upscaled software support for flagship devices but also extended the mid-range and budget segment lifespan. Most recent models come with up to 6 years of software updates ( 13k too ), surpassing EU requirements.

Energy Label

June 20 will also mark the beginning of the EU’s Energy Labelling requirements. Phone makers will have to put an energy label on smartphones and tablets, which will display key details, including:

- energy efficiency
- battery longevity
- dust and water ingress
- protection
- repairability score

IP rating

Another consumer-friendly decision is the inclusion of the IP rating. It is to ensure the mobile devices offer resistance to accidental drops or scratches as well as protection from dust and water, which is offered as an IP rating.

More notable decisions:

Devices sold in the EU should also have “sufficiently durable batteries.” As per documents,

- The battery cell should withstand at least 800 charge and discharge cycles while retaining at least 80% of its initial capacity.

- Critical spares for repair must be available within 5-10 working days, and cover up to 7 years after the sale ends.

- Repairers should have access to the necessary assets for replacement.
