Bulgaria has begun demolishing a monument to the Soviet army, claiming it poses a 'security threat' to citizens.

Bulgarian authorities have begun demolishing a monument erected in Sofia in 1954 in honour of the Soviet liberators. The official reason given for the demolition of the memorial was the alleged risk of collapse due to corrosion cracks, so the capital's governor decided not to try to repair the landmark, but simply to demolish it, cut it into several pieces and hide it in a deserted place. For some reason, a police cordon was set up.

In the course of the demolition, the workers have already managed to saw off the bronze arm of the soldier with the machine gun. The Russian Foreign Ministry has said that Moscow considers the dismantling of the monument to the Soviet army to be a hostile move by Bulgaria.
