Queensland police to trial AI tool designed to predict and prevent domestic violence incidents

The algorithm uses data to identify high-risk offenders but some experts are concerned about its potentially serious pitfalls

Nursing crisis sweeps wards in England as NHS battles to find recruits

Hospitals in England are struggling to recruit staff for tens of thousands of nursing vacancies amid a mounting workforce crisis in the country.

There are nearly 39,000 vacancies for registered nurses in England, according to the most recent figures by the NHS, which also reveal one in 10 nursing posts empty on acute wards in London and one in five nursing posts unfilled on mental health wards in the south-east. Read more

1 in 6 Britons unable to buy essential food items, survey finds

Around one in six Britons have been unable to buy essential food items in the last two weeks due to a shortage of products and a supply chain crisis, statistics show.

According to the results of a survey by the Office for National Statistics (ONS),about 17% of people in the United Kingdom have been unable to purchase essential goods while almost a quarter of them have not been able to purchase even non-essential food products.

Only 57% of the participants said everything they needed had been available to buy, while 14% were forced to visit more shops to purchase necessities.

6 in 10 respondents reported that their food shopping experience had been different than usual and one in seven (15 percent) said they had not been able to buy fuel. Read more

Indeed, as I observed in How to Save the World (in One Easy Step!), narrative—the ability to shape people’s understanding of the world through story—is the most powerful weapon in the world. It should go without saying that owning a major media entity is the most effective way of wielding that weapon.
