Betrayed. Angry. Sad. Fearful. Despondent. Shocked. Bitter.

16 years as a loyal employee to the city of Los Angeles. 16 years of serving the public in their time of greatest need. 16 years of being as good an employee as possible. No reprimands. No demerits. No grievances. No formal discipline. Nothing. Exceptional employee reviews. Mentor. Instructor. Leader.

16 years of work. 16 years of effort. And yet today my department gave me an ultimatum.

48 hours. You have 48 hours to get in line, to be compliant, or you're gone. Leave. NO PAY. You're on a timeout to think about your actions until December 18th and then you're terminated anyway. So in 48 hours, Saturday morning at 1100 hrs, if I'm on duty I'll be gone. Pulled out of work. Sent home. No pay. IMMINENT THREAT. You're too dangerous. You can't be here.

What a betrayal. What a slap in the face. What a complete transformation from what a Fire Department used to be. TRADITION, we used to help out fallen brothers. If someone was injured or sick long term, his buddies would schedule work parties at the house to help with yardwork and to make sure the house was kept up. If someone's spouse or child became really sick, guys would pitch in and donate money to help pay treatments or the cost of being away for awhile.

In short, people CARED. There was EMPATHY, compassion, a "brotherhood". People looking out for one another and giving support in the time of greatest need.

Today's department has lost all resemblance to that. I have 48 hours to submit to something I'm vehemently opposed to, on a personal level, something that is within my sovereign and Constitutional rights to decline, but if I decline I'll be placed off duty without pay until I'm terminated.

And yet after being served this notice I'm expected to carry out the rest of my shift, to continue to operate as if my own employer isn't trying as hard as possible to terminate me.

Let's just pretend this didn't happen. We can all still be ok right? Just "get compliant" and you won't even get disciplined. We can all carry on.
