Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez was hospitalized Sunday night after apparently shooting himself, according to multiple law enforcement sources.

Ramirez, 52, a Miami-Dade Police lifer who rose through the ranks of the largest police department in the Southeast U.S. and who has filed to run for county Sheriff next year, was in Tampa attending a Florida Sheriffs Association conference, which began on Sunday.

Though information was scarce, law enforcement sources with knowledge of the incident said Ramirez had pulled over somewhere along a highway between Tampa and Miami when he shot himself. The circumstances that led to the incident weren’t immediately clear.

UPDATE: Miami Police are investigating a possible robbery on a yacht after receiving a 911 call about an armed suspect.

Miami Police received a 911 call before 9 p.m. about an armed suspect inside a yacht on the river near 114 Southwest North River Drive, behind The Wharf Miami.

The yacht was docked and everyone on board was evacuated from the vessel, police said.

It's unclear if police are searching for a possible suspect. No one was in custody as of Sunday night.
