The ICE shooting shows that a substantial cause of the division in this country is not merely that people have different values or opinions, it is that the left and right are living in two very different realities. How a person interprets what happened in those videos is almost entirely determined by their political priors - you see what you expect to see. And everyone is absolutely positive that their perception is correct -- that their reality is the true reality.

Is social media the cause of the growing divide between the political left and right in the U.S.?

Probably not.
But it may be the greatest accelerant.
Division existed long before Facebook, X, or Instagram. Economic stress, cultural shifts, media fragmentation, and political incentives were already pulling us apart. Social media didn’t create those forces—it poured gasoline on them.
Algorithms reward outrage over nuance. Tribal identity replaces thoughtful disagreement. Echo chambers harden certainty and weaken empathy.

The result?

We don’t just disagree—we distrust.
If we want less polarization, it won’t come from deleting apps alone. It will come from choosing curiosity over certainty, conversation over performance, and remembering that most people are more complex than a post or headline.
