‘Kids-For-Cash’ Judges Ordered To Pay $200 Million

Two former judges who sent children to for-profit juvenile detention centers have been ordered to pay over $200 million in damages to their victims.

Mark Ciaverella and Michael Conahan had hatched a scheme (dubbed ‘kids-for-cash’) to shut down a government-run jail and replace it with a privately run (and profit making) jail, and received kickbacks on every child sent there.

The two former judges were ordered to pay $106 million in compensation to the 300 victims who were part of the lawsuit (calculated at $1000 per day of wrongful incarceration), and $100 million in punitive damages due to the “unspeakable physical and emotional trauma” inflicted.
