The publication reports that the potential purchase price of the island exceeds half of the US Department of Defense's annual budget.
A significantly cheaper option, considered in the US as an alternative, is the so-called free association agreement. The agreement would provide for US financial assistance to Greenland in exchange for permission for the presence of American troops on the island.
Today, Mark Rubio and US Vice President Jay D. Vance are due to meet with representatives of Denmark and Greenland in Washington to discuss Donald Trump's proposals.
Earlier, Trump stated that the US needs Greenland to create a "golden dome", and emphasized that NATO should assist in this.
