Two weeks after McAfee reportedly committed suicide, his ex girlfriend claimed that she got a call from John himself.
In her own words:
"It's me John, I paid off people to pretend that I am dead but I am not dead. There are only three persons in this world that knows that I am still alive. He asked me to run away from with him."

Highlights from the Netflix Documentary show that McAfee had successfully faked a heart attack and bribed someone to get back to America in another sticky situation.
This would not have ben unprecedented for him.
