Turkey will expand its drive to lure savers back to the lira next week with a scheme aimed at bringing billions of dollars worth of “under the mattress” gold into the banking system. the government hoped that 10 per cent of the estimated $250bn worth of gold kept by Turks in their homes would be converted into lira under the initiative. Japan's producer price index marked another big spike in January, mainly due to higher prices of raw materials including crude oil. Food prices could soar even higher if conflict were to break out between Russia and Ukraine, top producers of corn and wheat that are a staple to billions around the world, and raise the specter of runaway inflation and political instability in the Middle East. Corn futures on the Chicago Board of Trade, now hover around $6.20 per bushel, marking a gain of more than 10% from a year earlier. Coffee prices have nearly doubled since this time last year. One major reason is because drought – followed by frost and extreme weather – hit hard in Brazil, the world’s largest coffee producer. The price of coffee is soaring, hitting a new 10-year high this week. Robusta coffee closed at $2.53USD/lb today.
