I’m going to share my perspective on the Pasni Port situation, along with a deeper analysis because there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

📝 🇵🇰/🇨🇳🇺🇸 Pakistan Floats $1.2B Port Idea to the U.S. in Pasni

Pakistan has reportedly floated a $1.2B commercial port project to the U.S. in Pasni, Balochistan. If it goes ahead, it could quietly shake things up in the region.

The idea is simple. Washington builds and invests in a civilian port, and in return, it gets favorable access to critical minerals. For the U.S., that’s a potential new route to rare earths in Asia, which China currently dominates.

Now, the location is key here. Pasni sits roughly 60–70 miles from Gwadar Port (which is Chinese-operated under the BRI) and about 100 miles from the Iran border. The plan involves connecting Pasni to Pakistan’s mineral-rich north through new rail lines, turning it into a strategic export corridor.

Islamabad has already made it clear this wouldn’t be a military setup. Pakistan doesn’t allow foreign military bases, and that policy isn’t changing. The U.S. wouldn’t be leasing land or running operations like in other regions. It’s strictly investment, with Pakistan keeping full control.

This isn’t a signed deal, more of a signal. Islamabad seems to be playing its cards smart, keeping its ironclad partnership with China intact while exploring ways to bring in U.S. capital. Think of it as Pakistan quietly opening another door without closing the existing one.

If this idea gains traction, Pasni could become an unexpected hotspot in the bigger U.S. - China rivalry. For Washington, it’s a potential alternative supply route.

For Islamabad, it’s classic Pakistani geopolitical chess, leveraging both sides to push development at home.

That’s my take on this idea so far. Of course, there’s also a military angle to consider, especially in terms of improving security and countering extremist groups in the region. But I wanted to keep that aside for now and focus mainly on the economic and strategic dimensions for Pakistan.
