💰🇵🇰📊 Pakistan Moves to Legalise & Tax Cryptocurrency Under New Digital Finance Reforms

Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has initiated formal work on legalising and taxing cryptocurrency, marking a shift in the country’s approach to digital assets. The move comes as part of broader digital finance reforms, aiming to regulate the crypto sector, bring it under the tax net.

Key Points:

• FBR has begun consultations with tax and legal experts to draft crypto taxation frameworks.

• Judicial and regulatory pressure is accelerating the timeline, with courts urging the government to legislate swiftly.

✍️ This is a major step for Pakistan, potentially opening up new tax revenues and paving the way for regulated digital finance. While full legalisation hasn’t happened yet, these developments signal serious intent to bring crypto into the formal economy.

⚠️🚛🇵🇰 🇦🇫 Pakistan’s Suspension of Afghan Transit Trade: A Strategic Pressure Move

Pakistan has officially suspended the Afghan Transit Trade (ATT), cancelling passes and offloading containers at ports and key crossings. The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) cited operational congestion caused by the closure of Torkham and Chaman borders following deadly clashes — but the move is part of a broader crackdown on smuggling, under-invoicing, and misuse of ATT channels that have long enabled illicit financial flows. Under Customs General Orders 97 and 98 of 2025, all transit is subject to strict technological tracking and remains fully suspended until border operations normalize.

For Afghanistan’s economy, the impact is immediate and severe. As a landlocked state, over 80% of Afghan imports — including food, fuel, and construction materials — move through Pakistan’s ports and overland routes. Alternatives like Iran’s Chabahar Port or Uzbekistan’s rail corridors exist, but they are slower by 7–10 days, cost up to 30% more, and lack the capacity for high-volume shipments, making them short-term substitutes at best.

The geopolitical timing is no coincidence. The suspension follows Pakistans conflict with Taliban, killing over 200 militants — including TTP — after unprovoked cross-border attacks on Pakistani posts. Islamabad has consistently accused the Afghan Taliban of providing safe havens to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), whose cross-border raids have surged by 50% in 2025. ATT routes have been implicated in funding and logistical networks that sustain these groups. A 48-hour ceasefire was brokered at Kabul’s request on October 15, but trade remains suspended — signalling that Islamabad is now explicitly linking economic access to security cooperation.

✍️ In essence, this is economic coercion as a tool of regional statecraft. By leveraging its geographic chokehold, Pakistan is forcing the Taliban to choose between TTP and Pakistan with stable bilateral ties. Kabul’s initial response has been muted, focused on the ceasefire, but prolonged disruption could intensify internal economic unrest in Afghanistan, whose GDP is already projected to contract by 2.5% in 2025. Regional observers warn of ripple effects: Central Asia could face trade realignments, Iran’s Chabahar may see a temporary boost, and SAARC dynamics could be further strained. This suspension isn’t just about customs or congestion — it’s about strategic leverage, security alignment, and reshaping Kabul’s calculus on cross-border militancy.

🇵🇰 Message to Readers

It’s become increasingly clear that many Pakistanis, particularly those living in the West, have a limited understanding of Afghanistan’s role in the ongoing security challenges facing our country. It’s disappointing to see how often misinformation spreads online, with some even taking the misguided view that Pakistan is the aggressor in this situation. In reality, Pakistan is defending its sovereignty and protecting its people against cross-border militancy, not initiating hostilities.

Even within Pakistan, there remains a lack of clarity about the underlying dynamics of this conflict. Too many are unaware of how Afghan territory is being used as a launchpad for attacks, how militant networks operate, and how regional politics play into this broader picture. This lack of awareness allows dangerous narratives to take root and distort public opinion.

This report aims to bridge that gap. It provides a clear, evidence-based geoanalytical breakdown of the situation, helping Pakistanis, both at home and abroad, better understand the strategic, ideological, and geopolitical factors at play. A Pashto and Urdu version will also be released to ensure wider accessibility for communities across Pakistan.

I’ve included both local and international references in the report for anyone who wants to study the issue in greater depth. I hope this report serves as a resource to counter misinformation and bring greater clarity to a critical national security matter.

🕊️🇵🇰🤝🇦🇫 Pakistan & Afghanistan Seal Immediate Ceasefire in Doha — Next Round of Talks Set for Istanbul on Oct 25

Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire following intensive negotiations in Doha, mediated by Qatar 🇶🇦 and Turkiye 🇹🇷. The development follows some of the worst border clashes since 2021, which saw deadly exchanges and Pakistani airstrikes targeting militant positions inside Afghan territory.

Key Points:

• Doha talks produced a ceasefire understanding, with Qatar and Turkiye mediating between both sides.

• A follow-up round of talks is scheduled for October 25 in Istanbul, where both sides will work on monitoring and verification mechanisms.

• Pakistan conducted targeted airstrikes on TTP positions inside Afghanistan during the recent clashes, signalling a zero-tolerance policy toward cross-border militancy.

• Kabul pledged to cooperate with Islamabad to dismantle militant sanctuaries, particularly those of the TTP and avoid interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs.

• Islamabad has reiterated that any terrorist activity launched from Afghan soil will be met with a swift, decisive, military response.

🌍 Geopolitical Analysis:

These latest developments mark a turning point in Pakistan’s counterterrorism posture. The recent airstrikes inside Afghanistan, aimed at TTP targets demonstrate that Islamabad is no longer willing to tolerate cross-border attacks or allow hostile actors to exploit Afghan territory as safe havens. Pakistan has made clear that any hostile neighbor harbouring groups that endanger Pakistani citizens will face forceful retaliation, not diplomatic appeals.

While Pakistan continues to frame Afghanistan as a “brotherly Muslim nation” and has opted for dialogue over escalation, it has also drawn a final red line: the issue lies with the Taliban’s actions, not with the Afghan people. If Kabul fails to act decisively, Islamabad is prepared to recalibrate its policy and treat the western frontier with the same strategic severity it applies to other hostile borders.

At the same time, Pakistan has emphasized its preference for peaceful, stable relations with all neighbors, seeking secure borders and mutual respect. But continued cross-border militancy will be met with strength — not leniency.

Analysts note that this ceasefire offers both sides a final diplomatic window. If Afghanistan delivers on its pledges, the region could see a stabilisation phase. If not, a far harsher and more kinetic Pakistani response is likely, reshaping the security dynamics of South and Central Asia.

✍️🇵🇰🤝🇦🇫 Pakistan–Afghan Ceasefire: Asif Sets Record Straight in Doha Talks

Following last week’s Doha ceasefire announcement, Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif clarified the terms, setting the record straight on what was agreed and with whom. Asif confirmed an immediate ceasefire with Afghanistan after talks mediated by Qatar 🇶🇦 and Turkiye 🇹🇷, held exclusively with the Afghan Taliban (TTA) and not the TTP, amid recent border clashes.

Key Points:

• Talks were held solely with the TTA, not the TTP, as Pakistan maintains a zero-negotiation stance toward the militant group.

• The ceasefire draft is concise, just four paragraphs, while viral versions circulating online are fabricated.

• Pakistan will raise the issue of TTP presence inside Afghanistan during the Istanbul talks on October 25.

• Asif, who earlier called the ceasefire “fragile” (Oct 15), now speaks with guarded optimism: “Hold on to hope, but it’s too early to conclude.”

• He reaffirmed that TTP leaders, families, and camps remain in Afghanistan, not Pakistan, despite Kabul’s denials.

• Warned of TTP and Indian elements attempting to sabotage peace, cautioning that violations could risk a wider conflict.

✍️ By dealing directly with Kabul’s leadership, Islamabad is testing the Taliban’s willingness to act against militant sanctuaries while keeping diplomatic channels open. The upcoming Istanbul talks on Oct 25 will serve as the first real test of Kabul’s commitment. If progress holds, both sides may move toward a verifiable monitoring framework; if not, Islamabad has signaled readiness to escalate and treat Afghan soil as a hostile frontier. Still, Asif’s tone of “guarded optimism” reflects Pakistan’s continuing preference for stability between brotherly nations, if trust is earned through action.
