🇨🇩 🇺🇸 Three #UnitedStates nationals and up to 20 Congolese were arrested following an attempted coup in the Democratic Republic of the #Congo (#DRC) early Sunday morning.
At around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, armed men led by Christian Malanga, a former Congolese politician and founder of the ‘New Zaire’ government in exile, attempted to storm the Kinshasa residence of President Felix Tshisekedi and the residence of the DRC’s Deputy PM of Economy, Vital Kamerhe.
According to Kamerhe’s spokesperson, Michel Muhima, “Two of the police officers assigned to his guard, as well as one of the attackers, lost their lives.”
Malanga was subsequently neutralized while resisting arrest at the Presidential Palace, according to the AP. Malanga’s son, who was captured on video wearing an American flag patch, an unidentified U.S National, and another U.S national assumed to be Benjamin Rueben Zalman Polun, were arrested.
US Ambassador to the DRC, Lucy Tamlyn, in a statement on X stated, “I am shocked by the events of this morning and very concerned by reports of American citizens allegedly involved. Please be assured that we will cooperate with the DRC authorities to the fullest extent as they investigate these criminal acts and hold accountable any U.S. citizen involved in criminal acts.”
The orchestrator of the attempted coup, Christian Malanga Musumari, was a former Captain in the DRC’s Army, President of the United Congolese Party (UCP), and founder of the Brussels-based ‘New Zaire’ government in exile.
Upon retiring from military service, Malanga ran against President Joseph Kabila, an action for which he was detained and held for two weeks. As a result, Malanga relocated to the United States in 2012 and focused the efforts of the UCP on the Congolese diaspora.
Currently, it is unknown what prompted Malanga, his son, and another U.S national to attempt the coup.
War still rages in the east of the DRC, with M23 rebels making gains daily, displacing millions, and killing thousands. Via theatlasnews.co

🇮🇱 🇵🇸 #ICJ Orders Israel to Halt #Rafah Operation, #Israel Refuses:
In an expected announcement, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to halt its operation in Rafah, #Palestine. The ICJ claimed that the humanitarian situation in Rafah has “deteriorated further” and that Israeli measures to protect civilians have failed. The ICJ also ordered Israel to respond to these demands and show compliance within one month.
In response, Israeli National Security Minister Ben-Gvir called for the “occupation” of Rafah and to increase military pressure in response to the ICJ order.
This order comes after the International Criminal Court (ICC) applied for arrest warrants for both Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and Hamas leader Sinwar.
While the ICC is independent of the UN, the ICJ is an organ of the UN and has considerably more power amongst international disputes than the ICC, which issues criminal court proceedings. All nations are party to the ICJ if they are members of the UN. However, as the U.S. demonstrated that after the ICJ ruling against its Nicaragua War, nations can withdraw compulsory jurisdiction in cases involving them if they do not agree. Via theatlasnews.co

🇺🇦🇷🇺 #Ukraine Targets Key Russian Missile Radar Station:
Ukraine has targeted the Armavir early warning radar station in #KrasnodarKrai, southern #Russia, reportedly using drones (Geo: 44.9251, 40.9838). Photos show damage to both of the radars located at the facility.
The effects of the strike can lead into two primary viewpoints:
1. The targeting and damaging of the facility is expected to have little impact on operations in Ukraine, as the radars are positioned to primarily cover ballistic missile threats coming from the south towards the Middle East.
The Radars are meant to detect ballistic missiles, not low altitude airborne threats like drones or air-launched missiles. Most Ukrainian strike capabilities would not be detected. While the station does have limited coverage of Crimea and the Black Sea, its detection ability is weak as these areas sit in the far edges of its area coverage. The targeting could be viewed as a way to help with ATACMS tactical ballistic missile strikes against Crimea, but detection would be done by local air defenses.
2. The targeting and damaging of the facility has degraded Russia’s ability to detect and respond to incoming nuclear threats.
If Russia accuses the United States of aiding in the strikes, this could see further escalation with the west as an attack against Russia’s ability to defend itself.
Russian military doctrine allows for the possible use of unclear weapons in response to attacks that disrupt its nuclear forces’ ability to respond to threats (although this would be very unlikely in this scenario).
In short, the strike could provide some tactical benefit to Ukraine, however, it will be limited. The strikes could see further escalation between Russia and western powers backing Ukraine, as the targeting of the station could be framed as a threat against Russia’s ability to protect itself from nuclear threats. 🇩🇪🇩🇰🇺🇦 #Germany and #Denmark Joint Tank and Military Package to #Ukraine, Defected Tanks Refused Last Fall:
Germany’s government said on May 22nd that they had completed another transfer of military equipment and supplies to Ukraine, notably sending more Leopard tanks, which were sent jointly with Denmark. Berlin has become the second-largest military donor to Ukraine, despite a slow start in the initial stages of the Russian invasion when the war broke out in early 2022. Reuters reported on May 21st that an unnamed source claims Germany plans to increase its spending in Ukraine by an additional 3.8 billion euros ($4.13b); this comes after the German parliament already approved 7.6 billion euros ($8.2b) in February. For comparison, the defense budget for the entire military is set at 71 billion euros ($76.5b).
In the fall of 2023, according to Danish outlet DR, citing documents from the Danish Defense Ministry, Ukraine refused to accept a shipment of outdated Leopard 1A5 tanks from Denmark and Germany due to defects or malfunctions. Reportedly, after inspection, 18 of the 20 tanks had issues, with two having “more serious defects,” according to the documents. The inability to fire the main barrel was among the problems in some tanks, reportedly. Following the incident, Denmark’s Defense Ministry confirmed that by May 2024 Germany had sent more than 90 tanks to be repaired in Denmark and that some had been delivered to Ukraine but not all.
Contents of May 22nd Package:
-10 Leopard 1A5 tanks, ammunition for Leopard 2 tanks;
-8,500 rounds of 155 mm ammunition;
-1.8 million rounds of small arms ammunition;
-20 Vector reconnaissance drones with spare parts;
-34 RQ-35 Heidrun reconnaissance drones;
-Four Wisent 1 demining tanks;
-A Dachs armored engineer vehicle;
-A Beaver bridge-laying tank with spare parts;
-A Bergepanzer 2 armored recovery vehicle with spare parts;
-111 CR 308 rifles, 80 HLR 338 precision rifles, 540 MK 556 assault knives;
-16 Zetros tankers, 400 LED lamps, and two mine plows. Via theatlasnews.co

🇨🇳🇹🇼 #China Increases Military Activity Around #Taiwan on Second Day of Exercises:
The Taiwan Ministry of National Defense (MoND) has reported that on Friday, 62 PLA aircraft and 27 PLAN vessels operated around the island during the second and reportedly last day of the “Joint Sword” military exercises being carried out by Chinese forces. It should be noted there will likely be a second part of this exercise as the name was denoted by state media with the suffix "A" which indicates a "B" exercise.
The MoND stated that 47 of the aircraft entered Taiwan’s ADIZ, marking the largest incursion since December 2022. Likewise, the vessel deployments marked the largest on record since Taiwan began tracking these numbers in August 2022.
This comes one day after Taiwan reported that 49 PLA aircraft, 19 PLAN vessels, and 7 CCG vessels were operating around the island on the first day of the exercises.
The exercise areas completely surround Taiwan, simulating a blockade around the island by joint sea-air combat patrols. Likewise, exercises have taken place around the Taiwanese islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu, and Dongyin.
The PLA has stated that its forces will “test the ability to jointly seize power, launch joint attacks and occupy key areas.”
Last year’s Joint Sword exercises saw 232 PLA aircraft and 32 PLAN vessels operate around the island in a three day window. Via theatlasnews.co

🇺🇦 🇺🇸 M1 Abrams Slavic Style:
Recent photos reveal a #Ukraine-operated M1A1 Abrams Main Battle Tank (MBT) outfitted with a combination of #American M-19 Abrams Reactive Armor Tiles (ARAT) and #Russian Kontakt-1 Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks, along with a counter-drone “cope cage” around its turret. This unique combination of armor modifications has never been seen before on American-made tanks in Ukraine and highlights the need to adapt to drone warfare, especially following recent losses of Abrams tanks on the battlefield.
The emergence of these modified Abrams tanks underscores the rapidly evolving nature of modern warfare, particularly the significant threat posed by drones and loitering munitions. The adaptations seen on these tanks are a direct response to the increased vulnerability of traditional armored vehicles in the face of advanced aerial threats.
The losses of Abrams tanks in Ukraine, particularly around the Avdiivka frontline, have prompted a reevaluation of their deployment and tactics. According to reports, at least eight of the 31 supplied M1 Abrams have been lost, primarily due to drone and mine attacks. This has led to a tactical reset, with Ukraine pulling back Abrams from frontline operations to reassess and adapt their usage in the face of ubiquitous unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
According to AP, citing Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman Admiral Christopher Grady and other unnamed defense officials, the losses have led Ukraine to pull back Abrams from frontline operations to “reset tactics.”
“When you think about the way the fight has evolved, massed armor in an environment where unmanned aerial systems are ubiquitous can be at risk,” Grady said, adding “We’ll work with our Ukrainian partners, and other partners on the ground, to help them think through how they might use that, in that kind of changed environment now, where everything is seen immediately.”
