Chatter on Twitter that Taliban “red units,” which are considered the militant group’s special forces, are being sent in large numbers to Herat, where heavy urban fighting continues against ANDSF backed by former Mujahideen militias. I’m anticipating a heavy Taliban assault coming soon. We all joke about their cheesy videos but the red units are well trained and willing to die so this will be troublesome for the remaining Afghan forces in the city.

Pro-Taliban Twitter channels are claiming they have captured the Kunduz provincial capital as heavy fighting with Afghan forces continues. If confirmed, this will be the third provincial capital to fall in just three days (Shibirghan & Zaranj). Afghan forces have reportedly retreated to the city’s airport. Also some Taliban members are apparently rocking multi-cam thobes now.

Taliban improvised rocket-assisted munition (IRAM) facility somewhere in Afghanistan. IRAMs are pretty simple: rocket (typically a 107mm) + metal container/ propane tank filled with shrapnel = cheap and relatively effective bomb. Taliban have been using these quite frequently in attacks against police and ANDSF outposts.

Crazy footage of a Ukrainian man dropping a grenade as police attempted to arrest him, causing them to scatter as it detonated. According to local media sources, the incident began when a 61 year old man began threatening people outside of his home with two grenades, which prompted a police response. The suspect ultimately handed over one grenade, however, de-escalation attempts later failed and authorities took the chance to try to detain him. The suspect then dropped the grenade as he wrestled with police, blowing off his leg and leaving him in critical condition. There are differing reports whether or not that up to three officers were also wounded, but not seriously.
Massive car bomb detonation against the main police headquarters in Lashkar Gah earlier today. The building was later seized by the Taliban as they pushed into the provincial capital center.

Footage purportedly showing ANDSF forces in full retreat in parts of Herat after the Taliban declared victory over the strategic provincial capital. Speculation that they are trying to regroup with Mujahideen fighters and militia members to launch a counter offensive.
