🇷🇺🇩🇪🇺🇸 Assassination Plot Against #German Defense CEO Reportedly Foiled: https://theatlasnews.co/latest/2024/07/11/assassination-plot-against-german-defense-ceo-fails/
An assassination plot against the CEO of German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall by the #Russian Federation was foiled by American intelligence, five #UnitedStates officials claimed on Friday. The planned killing of Armin Papperger, the CEO of Rheinmetall, was a part of a larger plot by the Russia to assassinate key figures within arms manufacturing companies across Europe. @AtlasNewsTelegram
While others were in the sights of the Russian Federation, officials told reporters that the plot against Papperger was the closest to being conducted. Furthermore, Rheinmetall poses a large strategic target for Russia, as the company is the largest German manufacturer of 155mm artillery shells, which have proved to be vital to Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia. The company’s role in the conflict continues to be vital, as Rheinmetall will open an armored vehicle plant in #Ukraine in the coming weeks which has further soured relations between #Germany and #Russia.
The company is not just vital to Ukraine, however. Rheinmetall has also entered numerous contracts with the Bundeswehr, Germany’s military, to aid in the country’s rearmament amid deteriorating relations with Russia. These contracts include orders for logistical trucks and Germany’s deteriorated stock of 155mm artillery shells which have fallen significantly amid shipments of supplies to Ukraine.
Following the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced that the nation would bolster its military strength amid fears of further Russian aggression. In this speech, known as the “Zeitenwende Speech,” or “turning point,” Scholz announced that Germany would work towards increasing its military spending from 1.5% to NATO’s target of 2% of the nation’s GDP. Not only does Zeitenwende seek to increase military spending, but the policy also aims to secure Germany’s independence from Russian gas, instead moving towards renewable energy.
The failed assassination comes amid increasing acts of espionage by the Russian Federation, especially in the field of cyber warfare. In May, the German government, alongside the Czech Republic, the US Department of State, and NATO accused the Russian government of initiating cyberattacks against Germany’s defense and aerospace firms alongside the ruling Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) party.
NATO further claimed that entities in Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, and Sweden, along with government bodies and “critical infrastructure operators,” have also been targeted in attacks organized by Russia. The Russian Embassy in Germany called the accusations “another unfriendly step aimed at inciting anti-Russian sentiments in Germany.”

🇨🇳🇷🇺🇺🇦 Xi Emphasizes Modernization of #PLA Medical Training, Incorporating Lessons from #Ukraine War: https://theatlasnews.co/latest/2024/07/10/xis-emphasizes-modernization-of-pla-medical-training-incorporating-lessons-from-ukraine-war/
In April, #Chinese leader #Xi Jinping inspected the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) Army Medical University (AMU), located in the city of Chongqing, underscoring #China’s intensified focus on enhancing battlefield medical capabilities as the nation incorporates lessons learned from observing #Russia's war in Ukraine into its military medical system. Xi gave a short speech to a group of PLA officers and NCOs during his inspection tour. The speech emphasized the “importance of orienting towards the battlefield, the army, and the future, improving the level of education and training, security capabilities, and striving to build a world-class military medical university.” The university’s faculty, staff, and students also briefed Xi on different achievements and areas the university conducted research on. The university students and staff demonstrated and exhibited various pieces of combat medical equipment for Xi during his visit. @AtlasNewsTelegram
The staff briefed Xi about AMU’s current situation and the various medical treatment disciplines used on the battlefield. They also set up displays of first aid equipment used to treat “war injuries” and demonstrated various first aid procedures. Xi examined the demonstrations and displays while he discussed them with the AMU staff and students.
During the inspection, Xi “gave a series of important instructions on vigorously promoting medical research and innovation” to the students and staff. Xi’s instructions included points on how to enhance tactical medicine on the battlefield and increase the PLA soldiers’ combat effectiveness. Xi also urged the staff and students to strengthen “the construction of healthcare and security.” He then asked the staff and students to provide “strong service to the combat effectiveness of the troops and to increase the physical and mental health of the officers and soldiers.” Xi said these two points would ensure that the PLA’s actual action is to win modern conflicts.

🇺🇸 “I believe I’m the best qualified to govern, and I think I’m the best qualified to win,” U.S. President #Biden says at press conference Thursday night regarding the 2024 presidential election. @AtlasNewsTelegram
"President Joe Biden dug in on his 2024 reelection bid Thursday at a solo press conference following the NATO summit in Washington, despite a growing list of rank-and-file Democrats and high-profile supporters urging him to abandon his campaign over suspected health concerns.
The highly anticipated press conference followed weeks of speculation about Biden’s ability to hold office and whether he should remain in the 2024 presidential election against former President Donald Trump. His performance, while markedly stronger than his devastating debate performance, still included a notable gaffe and could leave questions open.
In response to the first question, about if Vice President Kamala Harris would be an able candidate against Trump, Biden mixed up their names.
“I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I didn’t think she was not qualified to be president,” he said.
Biden fielded a wide range of questions from reporters from both the #UnitedStates and overseas for just less than an hour. The meeting with the press came exactly two weeks after the June 27 debate, during which Biden stumbled repeatedly, spoke in a hoarse voice and appeared unable to finish some sentences.
Biden and the White House have repeatedly attributed the debate as a “bad night” and pointed to clean results from his last three annual physical examinations.
Asked directly about congressional Democrats’ unease about his candidacy, Biden said he had made a final decision to remain in the race, but was working to show doubters he was up to the task and responding to criticism that he could not handle impromptu questioning. “I’m determined on running,” he said. “But I think it’s important that I allay fears by seeing — let them see me out there.”
He added that delegates pledged to him through the Democratic nominating process should be free to vote their conscience, but that no one had a better alternative to his candidacy against Trump, the presumed Republican candidate.
“I believe I’m the best qualified to govern and I think I’m the best qualified to win,” Biden said. “But there are other people who could beat Trump, too, but it’s awful hard to start from scratch.”
Asked if he would step aside if his polling data showed Harris could beat Trump, Biden said he would not, unless it also showed he could not win.
“No one’s saying that,” he added in a whisper. “No poll says that.” Harris is seen as the likeliest replacement for Biden if he were to leave the race.
A trickle of congressional Democrats calling for him to leave the race since July 2 turned to a stream this week — with some reports indicating a poor performance Thursday night could give way to a flood.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, a decades-long friend of Biden’s, urged colleagues in an MSNBC interview Wednesday to “let (Biden) deal with this NATO conference, this is a very big deal.”
At the time Biden began his Thursday press conference, 14 Democrats in Congress had explicitly called for him to leave the race, with others suggesting it.
Shortly after the press conference concluded, two more, Connecticut’s Jim Himes and California’s Scott Peters, called on Biden to step aside."

Update: House Democrat freshman Rep. Eric Sorensen of Illinois has also joined calls for Biden to step aside.

🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇺🇦 🇬🇧 🇩🇪 NATO Into the Future and $600 Million Ukraine Aid: Key Topics at Day Three of the #NATO Summit - https://theatlasnews.co/latest/2024/07/12/nato-into-the-future-key-topics-at-day-three-of-the-nato-summit/
The NATO summit in #WashingtonDC has come to a close. #Ukraine remained the most prominent topic of conversation, as has been the case for most NATO meetings since the war began over two years ago. @AtlasNewsTelegram
Out of the meeting came a number of promises for more aid to Ukraine, commitments from member states to meet NATO’s obligatory defense budget of 2% of a nation’s GDP, and a number of cooperation agreements between many of NATO’s member states.
Largely avoided before, #China was also an issue featured prominently at the summit, and continuous condemnations were offered for China’s support of #Russia in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Several different nations announced aid packages of varying size for Ukraine.
#Canada and the #UnitedStates announced substantial aid packages for Ukraine. U.S. President Joe #Biden announced that an aid package for Ukraine valued at $225 million USD during a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr #Zelenskiy. The package includes the already announced Patriot air defense battery and Stinger anti-aircraft weapons, as well as ammunition for already-in-place surface-to-air missile systems, ammunition for the U.S.-supplied High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), more Javelin anti-tank weapons, as well as 155mm and 105mm shells.
Canada on Wednesday announced its own aid package of $500 million CAD ($367 million USD). The exact details of Canada’s aid package are not known. However, Canadian Prime Minister Justin #Trudeau did announce that Canada intends to open training opportunities for Ukrainian F-16 pilots.
NATO as a whole has stated they will seek to provide more training opportunities for Ukrainian troops, both for F-16 flight training as well as general training purposes. For this purpose, there is to be a command center established in #Germany, and several logistics hubs in eastern Europe. In total, these centers are to be staffed by approximately 700 NATO personnel.
Andriy Yermak, the head of President Zelenskiy’s cabinet, said that Ukraine was “satisfied” with the outcome of the summit, which has seen a number of aid packages promised to Ukraine, as well as affirmation that Ukraine’s path to NATO membership is “irreversible.”
However, there remained one pressing Ukrainian request that had not been fulfilled. Ukraine has requested that all restrictions on carrying out strikes deep in Russia be lifted. This request was partially granted when U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer permitted Ukrainian use of Storm Shadow missiles to strike inside Russia. The U.S., however, has remained firm on the matter. President Zelenskiy thanked NATO and the West for its support, but reiterated this request in some of his closing remarks at the summit.
