🇲🇱 🇷🇺 #Wagner Enters the #Tuareg’s Existential War in #Mali: https://theatlasnews.co/latest/2024/07/14/wagner-enters-the-tuaregs-existential-war-in-mali/

At least 23 Tuareg civilians have been killed by elements of the Malian army (FAMA) and Wagner forces in Mali’s Kidal region in four days, between July 9th and 12th. According to a statement from the Permanent Strategic Framework for the Defense of the People of Azawad (CSP-DPA), seven civilians and one member of the Malian armed forces who was on leave were killed in the village of Takalote, while another five men were killed in the northeastern commune of Tin-Essako and buried in a mass grave. “Following this horrible mission, more than 10 unarmed civilians were executed,” the statement said. @AtlasNewsTelegram

After the attack on Takalote across July 9-12th, Wagner forces moved into Tin-Essako, where the bodies of five civilians, Ebagraz Ag Mahamad (69 years), Mohamed Ag Attiyoub (23 years), Mossa Ag Attiyoub (12 years), Mossa Ag Bakila (40 years), and Mahmoud Ag Zaydoune (35 years), were found in a mass grave.

In the aftermath of the attack and according to local reports, a well in Innoufassan, which is believed to be near Tin-Essako, was poisoned as the villagers fled.

“Cows were slaughtered and their carcasses trapped,” said the CSP-DPA, with the head of a slaughtered cow found buried and rigged with explosives.

It is alleged that at least 10 unarmed civilians were killed as FAMA and Wagner forces departed Tin-Essako.

Attacks against Tuaregs have increased in the country in recent weeks, with a series of drone strikes conducted on Tin-Essako on June 19th. The increased attacks signal the beginning of a counter-offensive against the Tuareg rebels, with which the Malian government under Assimi Goita terminated a 2015 peace agreement in late January.

In response, Inkinane Ag Attaher, Commander of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA)—who made serious gains against the Malian army in 2012—posted images of multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs), stating, “Wagner traps in Azawad.”

Azawad, roughly translating to ‘the land of transhumance,’ in reference to the nomadic lifestyles of the Tuareg people, is an imagined state found in northern Mali, where the country’s Tuaregs reside.

🇺🇸 #NEW #Biden May Drop Out of 2024 Election as Soon as this Weekend:

Several top Democrats have privately told Axios that #UnitedStates President Joe Biden may drop out of the 2024 Presidential Election as soon as this weekend amid increasing pressure from party members. @AtlasNewsTelegram

This comes as Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (NY) “forcefully made the case that it would be best if Biden bowed out of the race” during a “blunt one-on-one conversation” with the President on Saturday, according to ABC chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl.

Yesterday, Representative Adam Schiff (CA) called on Biden to “pass the torch” because he has “serious concerns about whether the President can defeat Donald Trump in November.”

Likewise, 20 other Democratic members of Congress have called on Biden to withdraw from the presidential race since the Debate. Via theatlasnews.co

🇺🇸 #NEW Trump Shooter Searched Details on #Trump and #Biden According to FBI:

A top #FBI official told lawmakers in Congress on Wednesday that the would-be assassin who opened fire at former President Donald Trump's rally in #Pennsylvania, #UnitedStates, had used his cellphone to search for images of Trump and President Biden, as well as to look for dates of both Trump's rally and the Democratic National Convention. @AtlasNewsTelegram

FBI officials on calls, according to the NYT, expressed their confusion with the lack of evidence found on both phones the gunman had, finding one on his body and one in his home. Officials said his online search history indicated he was "broadly interested in powerful and famous people, without any obvious ideological or partisan pattern."

Officials also said he had searched online for "major depressive disorder," according to those on the calls and who had been briefed on the update, reports the New York Times. The shooter also searched online for information about other public figures, such as FBI director Christopher A. Wray, Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, and one of the members of the British royal family.

Earlier reports by the FBI to Congress had claimed the the gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, had posted details of his attack on the gaming platform Steam however according to new reports law enforcement now believe it was a fake account.

In the past months, the shooter had ordered parts online to assemble a radio-controlled explosive device that authorities found in his car, made from commercial firework control systems. No evidence of co-conspirators or any connections to foreign actors has been uncovered, said top bureau officials reportedly as well during calls to the House and Senate.

Officials said Crooks was on good terms with his parents, who were counselors, but weren't close to his day-to-day. He was a registered Republican, but the FBI hadn't been able to find any indication of strong partisan beliefs going either way, according to the most recent report.

The shooter reportedly had a backpack and rangefinder and was spotted by the Secret Service for as long as an hour before the actual assassination attempt. Kimberly A. Cheatle, the director of the Secret Service, admitted that her agency made serious “mistakes” during the incident. Via http://theatlasnews.co

🇺🇦 🇷🇺 A #Ukrainian drone attack targeted an oil refinery in #Tuapse, northeast coast of the #BlackSea, #Russia, causing a fire. @AtlasNewsTelegram

The refinery, owned by the #Russian oil giant Rosneft, includes a port terminal, and primarily exports its products, with 90% of its output destined for international markets. The refinery has an estimated annual processing capacity of 240,000 barrels per day.

Russian officials reported that no casualties occurred and nearly one hundred emergency responders managed to contain the fire. The blaze was attributed to falling drone debris by regional authorities, who accused #Ukraine of targeting civilian infrastructure.

The extent of the damage remains unclear, and it is unknown if the refinery is operational. Via theatlasnews.co

🇨🇾 🇬🇷 🇹🇷 Fifty years after the 1974 Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation of approximately 40 percent of #Cyprus, the island nation is embarking on a significant upgrade and expansion of the “Evangelos Florakis” naval base with support from #Greece. On July 17, Vasilis Palmas, the Defense Minister of the Republic of Cyprus, announced these plans, which aim to enhance the island’s naval capabilities and its geo-strategic position in the Eastern Mediterranean. @AtlasNewsTelegram

The expansion of the Evangelos Florakis naval base is a strategic move intended to bolster Cyprus’s role as a key hub for humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza under the US and EU-approved Amalthia Initiative. Greece is set to provide technical expertise and assistance. This strategic focus comes during increasing geopolitical tensions in the region. The upgrade aligns with past agreements allowing the French Navy permanent access to the base and, more recently, a scheduled visit by the USS Arleigh Burke destroyer on April 9 during its deployment with the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group in the region.

Cyprus’s aeronautical capabilities have been desperately lacking in the 50 years since the invasion. Despite significant modernization efforts for the Cypiot National Guard, the balance of power remains heavily skewed in favor of #Turkey’s 43,000 troops, made up of infantry, heavy armor, and artillery commanded by Ankara’s occupation garrison, the “Cyprus Turkish Peace Force Command.” Cyprus’s standing forces of around 15,000 and Greek bolstering troops of a few thousand have only Cypriot reserves to pull from further, around 20 to 30 thousand depending on different estimates.

🇺🇬 #Ugandan police and military have upped their presence in the country’s capital, #Kampala, in anticipation of a youth-led anti-corruption ‘March2Parliament’ today, an early indication that the historic “Gen-Z” protests that swept Kenya last week could be reverberating on the continent. Via theatlasnews.co @AtlasNewsTelegram

In the lead up to the protests, #Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni stated, “we are busy producing wealth…and you here want to disturb us. You are playing with fire because we cannot allow you to disturb us.”

Using social media and inspired by the recent anti-government protests in Kenya, young Ugandans began organizing a march to parliament to protest corruption in the country. This has been a long-running grievance and is seen by many as a major hindrance to economic prosperity.

And despite the heavy police presence and warnings from the likes of Museveni and the police, young Ugandans are still stating their willingness to take part in the protest.

Much of the youth’s grievances stem from the nation’s well-documented history of high-level government corruption. Most recently, in February, the hashtag ‘UgandaParliamentExhibition’ illustrated instances of this alleged corruption and specifically focused on the country’s speaker of Parliament, Anita Among.

In April, Among was sanctioned by the UK government for “stealing from the poorest communities in Uganda,” after she profited from the sale of iron sheets meant for the building of housing for the country’s poor.

In May, Among was then sanctioned by the US, “due to [her] involvement in significant corruption tied to her leadership.”

Furthermore, many of the youth, speaking on X, have called for the resignation of President Museveni, who has ruled the African nation since 1986.

🇬🇪 #Georgia’s “Foreign Agent” Law Faces Challenge in Constitutional Court: https://theatlasnews.co/latest/2024/07/23/georgias-foreign-agent-law-faces-challenge-in-constitutional-court/

In Georgia, the controversial “foreign agent” law, which has sparked widespread opposition, violent demonstrations, and multiple legal challenges across the country for several months, is set for review in the Constitutional Court. @AtlasNewsTelegram

When first introduced, the law raised concerns about the country’s European Union aspirations, as it mandates that organizations receiving more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad would be required to register as “foreign agents.”

Passed by the ruling Georgian Dream party, the law is being linked by its detractors to similar legislation in Russia.

Despite international and domestic pressures, Georgian Dream has defended the law as a measure to enhance transparency in NGO funding.
