I was talking to someone that took it even further and said “well even if it doesn’t stop transmission, it still lowers symptoms which means less hospitalizations and ICU admissions and less burden on the healthcare system so people still need to get it.” Lines crossed. These people honestly think they get to tell others how sick they are allowed to get. That’s like demanding someone take vitamin c to prevent sickness (hmm not a bad idea?). If not burdening the healthcare system was the priority, they’d be demanding we outlaw smoking, drinking, fast food, and sugar. That’s the real burden. But we don’t. You know why? So every time you see someone posting their virtue signaling band-aided up arms on Insta demanding everyone do the same, just remember we do have a responsibility. A responsibility to control only ourselves, to weigh all the pros and cons of any medical procedure, to use critical thinking to look at trials and science and decide what is best for our own circumstances.

While health is in the public eye, I thought it’d be appropriate to address American health statistics, especially when compared to other industrialized nations.

Despite spending the most on healthcare/medical science, America is by far the most unhealthy of all Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) nations. OECD nations are comprised of 36 modern, industrialized countries that are relatively similar.

According to the American Public Health Association, “The U.S. spends more on health care but has worse health outcomes than comparable countries around the globe. This holds true across age and income groups.”

Americans have shorter lives — over the past 25 years, U.S. life expectancy has grown, but at a lower rate than other OECD countries.

Bad birth outcomes — we have the highest rates of infant mortality, low birth weight, women dying due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth and children less likely to live to age 5.

Heart disease — the U.S. death rate from ischemic heart disease is the second highest.

Obesity and diabetes — for decades, the U.S. has had the highest obesity rate across all age groups, and American adults have the 3rd highest rate of diabetes.

Chronic lung disease — lung disease is more common in the US than any other OECD nation.

Disability — Older U.S. adults report a higher prevalence of arthritis and limits to their daily activities.

Suicides — the US has the highest suicide rate.

Drug-related death — we lose more years of life to alcohol and other drugs even when deaths from drunk driving are excluded. In fact, the president's 2014 National Drug Control Strategy noted overdose deaths now surpass homicides and car crash deaths.

Pharmaceutical products — Comprising 5% of the World Population, Americans Take 50% of All Pharmaceutical Drugs

Chronic disease — 54% of children suffer from a chronic disease.

Autism —- 1 in 36 children are autistic. Projections show that 1 in 2 children will be autistic by 2030.

Autoimmune Conditions —- according to the Autoimmune Advocacy Alliance, it is likely that 1 in 6 Americans suffers from one or more autoimmune diseases.

these statistics can be pretty depressing to look at. I highlight them to make a point- maybe Huxley, who died in 1963, saw all of this coming. Our obsession with science & innovation, especially when tied in with financial incentives and conflicts of interest, probably doesn’t mesh well with mind/body/spirit health. Maybe it’s time we collectively reconsider our approach to health in western nations. True health is found by treating our mind, body, and spirit as a temple- eating whole, organic foods from the earth, healing our trauma, praying & meditating/adopting a mindful approach, spending time in nature, grounding your feet to the earth, drinking unfluoridated, mineralized water, exercising, cutting out environmental toxins, detoxifying yourself, focusing on your breathe, etc.
Although allopathy is great for acute/emergency care, lasting health will not be found through the allopathic approach of overprescribing pharmaceutical drugs, v******s, surgery. It’s time for us to pause and reflect on what health requires.
