This was my grandfather. He was a cowboy born on a homestead in the 1930’s in Western Canada.

My heritage is German and English diaspora who carved farms out of the wilderness. They made something from nothing. They were resourceful in a harsh and unforgiving environment.

My grandfather put a gun in my hands when I was 6. He taught me to ride and trap. He showed me how to skin and butcher game.

I’m proud that I came from the men of the Wild West. Their stories drove me to enlist which had me end up fighting in Afghanistan.

The lessons I learned there, I paid for in blood. Our war isn’t on foreign soil.

I have returned Europe; the home to the land of my ancestors left in the early 1800’s. I don’t know if I came here by accident or fate. I fell in love with a woman from the tribes of my ancestors who stayed in our homeland.
