About six years ago, i had a detailed conversation with several friends/coworkers in the Information Systems/Information Security space about SCADA systems: Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition systems. SCADA systems are ordinary pc’s that run windows operating systems predominantly & use often antiquated SCADA software. Many times the software is so old the vendors are long out of business, or the software reached end of life a decade or more ago but companies keep using it because it still does the job & is expensive & complex to replace. This often means the pc’s running the SCADA software/systems must run on very antiquated windows versions— like Windows XP. I’ve even run across windows 2000 w/networking running SCADA systems in Industry.

You know what that means?
1. The systems are by their nature networked & remotely accessible.
2. The systems are wide open to hacking & sabotage.

Think of the power grid, manufacturing, and Oil Production facilities….
