The New York Times: Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei directed the Supreme National Security Council on Monday to prepare for an attack on Israel, three Iranian officials familiar with war planning said.

• The sources said that Khamenei made the decision after reviewing a detailed report by senior military commanders on the extent of the damage

• Khamenei said in the hearings that the scale of the Israeli attack, as well as the number of casualties - the killing of at least four army soldiers - was too great to ignore, and that not responding meant admitting defeat, according to the three sources.

• The sources said that the reaction is not expected before the US election because Khamenei does not want to help Trump, who may benefit from escalation.
