Donald Trump's promise to tariff Mexico, China, and Canada if they don't stop allowing drugs and illegal migrants into America, shows his political brilliance and the badly-needed change in approach he is bringing to American politics.

America is a large and important country. It is basic logic that we should use our power to protect the interests and well-being of our people. Why do we not? Because for most of our leaders, it would never even occur to them to do that. For them, America exists to either enrich themselves personally, or to enrich the rest of the world by giving everything away to them.

Trump, though, has the radical idea of putting America's interests first, and he understands tariffs are a powerful way to achieve those interests.

America is the biggest economy in the world and the biggest market for imported goods from abroad. Trump is the first American president in decades to realize that this gives us power. Other countries need access to our markets. So why in the world do we let them take advantage of us?

Mexico is utterly and completely dependent on the U.S. to prop up its economy. They manufacture goods to ship over the border, they receive remittances from workers in the U.S., and they get most of their tourists from the U.S. Mexico needs us. So why, Trump asks, do we let them herd illegal immigrants over our border? It happens because our leaders are suckers! They let Mexico do it.

The Trump message is, not anymore. And that's the genius of his tariff announcement yesterday. Mexico and Canada have nearly two months to seriously play ball on securing our shared borders. America's problem has now become their problem too. Secure the border, on your end, or your economies will get crushed.

Are these tariffs calculated to maximize short-term GDP growth? Nope! But short-term GDP growth is all many of our leaders have cared about, and it’s led our country to ruin. Trump realizes that it’s not worth wrecking America for the sake of “free trade,” and if countries are ripping us off or offloading their problems onto U.S. taxpayers, we have to make them feel pain, or they’ll never stop. The clueless leaders of the past thought you could get other countries to behave better by asking nicely! Idiots.

This is Trump at his best, and it’s what makes “elites” freak out so much. Trump can look at the NATO budget and ask “Why are we in an alliance where we spend tons of money, and our allies spend almost nothing? They should pay more or we’re leaving.”

Before Trump, none of our leaders would do this, and so we got the situation where America is paying the defense costs for half of Europe rather than just for ourselves.

Elites want you to think that government is incredibly convoluted and difficult to understand. But on the most essential questions facing the country, it really isn’t. It’s just a choice: Put America first, or put America last. For decades, our leaders put America last and got the results you’d expect.

Now, finally, the American people have chosen something different.

Democrats are still in denial. We actually fully intend to solve the mass illegal migration and border crisis once and for all. America will not be invaded. Invaders will be given no quarter.

Within hours of President Trump announcing a 25% tariff on all goods sold in the US from Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum declares that no migrant caravans will reach the US Border. President Trump has promised to keep the tariffs in place "until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!"
