Seeing the vehicle which drove thru the rioting in LA the other day; i am reminded of a situation my Father told me.

April 1968
Our country in many cities is aflame with large, violent riots due to the assassination of the Rev Martin Luther King, Jr. This included Washington, D.C. where Dad was assigned to Washington Head Quarters of the FBI (yes, my Father was a Special Agent for approximate 23 years; retiring due to mandatory rules at 55)

Dad was working at WHQ, while we lived in Bowie, Maryland (one of the bedroom communities for DC) The personal car he had at the time was a VW Bug. Why is that important? Other than being one of his favorite vehicle types, the VW Bug then, was a very light in weight car. A car that several large college football players would be able to lift, move, flip, etc.

My Grandparents, Dad's parents; were traveling to DC from North Jersey (outside of Elizabeth, NJ) by train for my Christening. During the travel from NJ to MD, the DC riots exploded. Dad was at work, and was to pick up his parents from the train station.

This was the first, and only time, that Dad straped a second firearm on, in a 23 year career with the Bureau.

As Dad left the Hoover building; driving, he could see the violent riot crowd moving towards his direction. He was in the VW Bug. He knew if he had stopped, he would be beaten and probably murdered by the rioters.

Dad gunned the engine and did not stop as he drove towards the rioters. Gaining speed as he drove closer, the rioters parted as the biblical Red Sea and he was able to get home safely.

Why am I bringing this up now? As there are riots advertised to be around the country on 14 June 2025; the 250th Birthday of the UW Army, Flag Day; I will do what Dad did, and counseled his children to do: Do Not Stop for Rioters for the Mob will act violently and place your life at risk.
