▪️ These 42 Senate Democrats blocked a vote on the resolution of disapproval, allowing the Iran deal to proceed.
▪️ Republicans opposed it but lacked the numbers to stop it.
▪️ This deal led to the unfreezing of Iranian assets and the controversial $1.7 billion cash settlement (separate from the nuclear deal but happening around the same time).

How did Obama get ahold of that money and where did those funds come from?

Obama accessed the money through two main mechanisms
— Breakdown of the Money Iran Received:

1. $1.7 Billion in CASH (2016)

▪️ Source: U.S. Treasury’s Judgment Fund
▪️ Why? Settlement of a 1979 arms deal dispute.
▪️ How? Delivered in cash (euros, Swiss francs, etc.) on pallets via cargo plane
▪️ Congress was not required to approve the payments, which was a major point of controversy.

2. Unfrozen Iranian Assets ($50-$150 Billion)

▪️ Source: Iran’s own money that had been frozen in foreign banks due to sanctions
▪️ How Much Was Actually Usable? U.S. officials estimated Iran could access around $56 billion, not the full amount.
▪️ How? Released by foreign banks after the Iran deal lifted sanctions.
