My dad was an avid reader and would polish off books late into the evening and well into the morning hours. I have a lot of his old books on my shelves today, including The Killer Angels, which I read while deployed in Afghanistan.

He gave me the best skills I have today and drilled into me what it would take to survive a lot of difficult times. Yet there was a time in my life when I knew him differently, dealing with constant criticism, perfectionism, and the drinking.

Dad became proud of me near the end of his life and we truly connected as we bonded over service he never imagined I would move toward. And those years were all it took for me to see the man as he really was inside, and my own issues and failures in life have helped me forgive the wounds of his past he did his best to move beyond.
