I get complaints a lot about switching from politics & news to cover weather; Vince is right- this is deadly serious. While many people had their weather radios turned off & were trying to get a good night’s sleep, a violent tornado came into their communities and put thousands of lives in peril. Many didnt survive. The coverage here & other places is meant to reach people, who can potentially reach others directly in danger & warn them. Or reach people who can help in an Emergency. People, buy a weather radio. Turn it on & leave it on. Put an app on your phone & put up with the annoying alerts. Know what to do when the alarm is sounded. Its the difference between surviving, and being a casualty. Protect yourself & your families.

Twenty three people lost their lives last night to this super cell that produced violent tornadoes that were on the ground tracking for close to 100 miles. As search & rescue efforts continue, that number will almost certainly climb. 😢

Horizontal vortices do not occur in weak to strong tornadoes- they only occur in the most violent of tornadoes.

A couple screen grabs from Aaron Rigsby’s 4k drone footage of damage in Rolling Fork MS. You can see ‘wind rowing’ of debris. And homes completely swept away & bare slabs.
😢331
Large hardwood trees with all limbs torn off & totally debarked by winds. Note that little to no debris wrapped on this tree: that was done by sheer power of the tornado winds.

These are EF-4 to EF-5 damage indicators.

Note the relatively uniform direction of the debris as the tornado came through. The direction the debris points shows you the direction of the tornado’s travel. Wind rowing.

That was a house. Note the damage to the tree too.

The gate to hate windspeed at this moment was measured near ground level at over 250 mph.
