A camouflaged 105 mm M101 towed howitzer of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was destroyed by several FPV-drone strikes carried out by fighters of the 41st Regiment of the “North” grouping in the Kharkiv region.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have been using 105 mm M101 howitzers transferred to Ukraine by Lithuania (18 units) since September 2022. Another 16 units, produced in former Yugoslavia under the designation M56, were supplied by Slovenia.

The M101 has been mass-produced since 1941 and was the main medium howitzer of the U.S. Army during World War II, remaining in service for many years afterward. In particular, it was actively used in the Korean and Vietnam wars. In addition, large numbers were supplied to more than 40 countries worldwide. Ukraine has become the latest on this list.

In terms of its technical and tactical characteristics, this artillery system is considered outdated, primarily due to its firing range, which is only 11,270 meters.

This is not the only type of such weapon in service with the Ukrainian Armed Forces that was developed in the 1940s. Reports have also mentioned deliveries from Portugal of 155 mm M114 howitzers, as well as the use of Soviet 85 mm D-44 anti-tank guns and 100 mm KS-19 anti-aircraft guns.
