In 1960, David Latimer planted a spiderwort sprout inside of a large glass bottle, added a quarter pint of water, and then sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for more than 60 years.
For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The Hook Island Sea Monster, also known as the tadpole creature, is the name given to a 90-foot sea monster sighted off the coast of Hook Island, Australia.
The monster was spotted by Robert Le Serrec and his family in 1964 when it moved towards his boat with its mouth open as if to attack. He described that It was when we got to within 20 feet of the serpent that we could see its head clearly. The head was large, about 4 feet from top to bottom, with jaws about 4 feet wide.
The general color of the body was black with 1 foot-wide brownish rings every 5 feet, the first starting just behind the head. Just as it seemed it would swallow the boat, it swam away. Le Serrec managed to take a few shots before it swam away, never to be seen again.
