From fighting wars to riding skateboards, there seems no limit to what we can design robots to do. But if we want a robot to clean up a nuclear accident, map a distant asteroid or terraform another planet, we cannot be sure what it should be capable of.
One solution is to use automata that can learn and adapt, and then reproduce to generate better versions of themselves. It may sound far-fetched by such evolving robots are already being created.
