In 1891, the schooner Thomas Hume, with seven sailors on board, sailed from Chicago to Muskegon. On May 21, the schooner disappeared with the crew. The lake was thoroughly explored, but not even a wreck from the Thomas Hume was found.

In 1921, 11 sailors from the Rosa Belle went missing. The ship itself was found capsized. It looked as if another ship had crashed into it. There was not a single piece of wreckage from another ship at the location of the Rosa Belle.

On June 23, 1950, an airplane flew from New York City to Minneapolis. The pilot asked the dispatcher for permission to lower altitude, refusing to give a reason. A few minutes passed and the plane disappeared from radar. No one else saw it. The lake was thoroughly examined, but no wreckage of the plane was found.

In 2000, dispatchers from the Lake Michigan coast began seeing strange planes on radar.
